The curse of Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Troubled cast blighted by woes while cult legacy has been tarnished by claims of on-set abuse – as decision to scrap revival leaves Sarah Michelle Gellar ‘blindsided’

Fans of the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer were really upset last week to learn that Hulu had unexpectedly canceled their planned reboot.

The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, centered on Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a high school student who secretly fought vampires and demons in the made-up town of Sunnydale, California.

A new version of the show was planned for February 2025, featuring Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar was also set to return as Buffy in a recurring role.

On Saturday, news broke that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, New Sunnydale, had been cancelled. Both Sarah Michelle Gellar and the reboot’s director, Chloe Zhao, reportedly learned of the decision unexpectedly.

The cancelled reboot is just the newest setback for the Buffy universe. The original cast has faced personal struggles, and the show’s reputation has been hurt by reports of mistreatment during filming and concerns about some of its storylines.

So what went wrong in the Buffyverse?

Nicholas Brendon’s addiction struggles

While the Buffyverse featured a lot of skilled actors, many of them faced personal struggles after achieving success on the show.

As someone who’s followed a lot of actors’ journeys, it’s always tough to see the challenges they face after a big show ends. A prime example is Nicholas Brendon, who we all loved as Xander on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sadly, a year after the show finished, he bravely sought help for alcohol issues, checking into rehab. It really highlights how even those who seem to have it all together can struggle with personal battles.

He explained that after recognizing his illness was overwhelming his life, he chose to go to a treatment center to get better.

Six years after his first time in rehab, he went back following an incident with the police. He was stunned with a taser and accused of damaging property, fighting arrest, and assaulting an officer. He later accepted a plea deal that included probation and community service instead of going to trial.

In Boise, Idaho, he was arrested in October 2014 and faced two minor charges: damaging property and interfering with police officers.

Officers responded to a disturbance at a hotel and found Brendon appearing intoxicated. He repeatedly ignored their requests to remain seated as they attempted to interview witnesses.

After being taken into custody, he allegedly attempted to escape. Previously, in February 2015, he was arrested for reportedly causing significant damage to a hotel room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, shortly after his marriage ended.

Later that year, two more arrests occurred. One involved accusations of damaging a hotel room – specifically, flipping the bed, breaking a porcelain statue, ripping out the phone, and clogging the toilet. The other arrest was for being drunk in public.

Later that year, after completing another stay in rehab, Brendon was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend. He reportedly grabbed her throat, took her car keys, and broke her phone, all in an effort to prevent her from leaving him.

He received 90 days of treatment for depression at a facility and later shared with Dr. Phil in an interview that he had previously tried to take his own life.

However, the situation worsened when the actor was arrested in 2017 for reportedly assaulting his girlfriend in a California hotel.

In May 2019, he faced domestic violence charges related to an incident and was given a three-year probation sentence.

Nicholas also struggled with his health, suffering from cardiac arrest in 2022.

This led to his second surgery in just a few months. He’d previously had spinal surgery in 2021 to address cauda equina, a condition causing nerve compression.

I’ve been following this condition closely, and it’s really heartbreaking to see how it affects people. Basically, it pinches the nerves in your lower back, and that can lead to numbness in your legs and feet. In severe cases, it can even impact your ability to control your bladder or bowels. It’s a serious issue, and awareness is so important.

Lately, Nicholas appears to be happier and more at peace, and he’s been sharing glimpses of his life with fans on social media.

In 2023, Nicholas shared a nostalgic post about his time on Buffy, expressing his gratitude to fans for continuing to love the show after all these years.

‘I’m just as big a fan as all of you and I miss watching it as much as I miss filming it.’

Emma Caulfield Ford’s health battles

After becoming known for playing Anya Jenkins on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Emma Caulfield Ford continued her career with roles in shows like Life Unexpected and, more recently, WandaVision and the Agatha All Along series.

Despite her professional success, Emma privately battled multiple sclerosis and didn’t share her diagnosis with the public until 2022.

The 52-year-old actress shared that she received a diagnosis in 2010 after experiencing a strange sensation – feeling like ‘millions of ants’ were crawling on her face when she woke up.

Doctors first thought Emma had Bell’s Palsy, possibly brought on by stress. As she explained to Vanity Fair, it was a very difficult year for her with a lot of personal struggles, so she initially agreed with that diagnosis.

She soon received a call from her doctor with the diagnosis: multiple sclerosis. Emma described it as a nightmare, explaining she was shocked to learn it was a serious condition, and immediately worried about how she would manage going to work.

As someone who’s navigated life with multiple sclerosis, just like my dad did, I’ve learned it’s all about pushing forward and doing what you can, even when things are tough. It’s about finding a way to manage the challenges and keep living your life to the fullest.

I’ve known about multiple sclerosis for a long time, so when I found out, I was shocked. I just needed to focus on staying strong and going back to work. That was the first time I had to hide what was happening and just keep things normal.

Emma shared that her diagnosis hasn’t changed her work ethic, and she jokingly described herself as someone who loves to stay busy, like a ‘worker bee’.

She explained that she feared being blacklisted if she spoke up. She believed there were already many unspoken reasons employers didn’t hire actors, and she felt that bringing this issue to light would simply mean losing work. She instinctively knew that addressing it would likely end her career.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s tragic death

Last February, the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Michelle Trachtenberg, who died at 39 due to complications from diabetes.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by career transitions! Michelle really captured everyone’s attention early on as a child actor, but she truly became a familiar face when she played Dawn Summers, Buffy’s younger sister. It was a role that launched her into so many homes!

This news came shortly after plans for a ‘Buffy’ reboot were revealed, and sources told the Daily Mail she was considering reprising her famous role.

According to a source who spoke with Daily Mail, she was very optimistic about the project. Sarah Michelle Gellar believed her involvement was essential for the reboot to succeed.

Friends of the actress knew she was struggling with health problems and believed that getting back to work might improve things for her.

According to a source, she played a key part in the original project, and people knew she had been dealing with health issues recently.

They thought giving her the role of Sarah’s sister in a new version of the show might help her get past her difficulties. She definitely wasn’t excluded or fired.

Michelle’s death was caused by complications from diabetes, according to the New York City Medical Examiner’s office. It’s currently unknown if she had type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

In the months prior to her passing, Michelle had undergone a liver transplant.

Joss Whedon abuse allegations

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended in 2003, but it wasn’t until 2021 – 18 years later – that accusations of mistreatment surfaced against its creator, Joss Whedon.

The claims surfaced after Charisma Carpenter, known for her role as Cordelia on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, publicly stated on X (formerly Twitter) that Joss Whedon misused his authority multiple times. She said his actions heightened her anxiety about performing and made her feel powerless and isolated from her colleagues.

She stated that his actions created a workplace atmosphere so negative and upsetting that it caused a long-term health problem she continues to experience.

The actress claims Joss repeatedly threatened her job with subtle, hostile behavior. After she became pregnant, he allegedly made disparaging remarks about her weight to coworkers and then privately questioned her about whether she planned to have the baby.

When the initial accusation came out, it really opened the floodgates. So many others started sharing their experiences, and I remember being shocked to hear Michelle Trachtenberg describe a strict rule that was in place on set: Joss wasn’t allowed to be left alone with her, ever. It was a really unsettling detail to learn.

Amber Benson, who played Tara Maclay on the show, agreed with Charisma’s statement, describing the set as having a ‘toxic environment’.

Honestly, hearing her talk about it still breaks my heart. She admitted so much happened back then, and even after all these years – over twenty! – she and a lot of others are still trying to make sense of it all. It’s just… devastating to think about, and she’s so brave for even acknowledging it.

Oh my god, you will NOT believe what Amber told Digital Spy! Apparently, during the last days of filming season five, Joss actually pulled her aside and was all, ‘Hey! Guess what?! This is SO exciting! We’re going to kill your character!’ Can you even imagine?! It’s just… amazing and awful all at once. I’m still reeling from hearing that!

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the star of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ posted a statement on Instagram supporting her former co-stars. She expressed pride in playing Buffy Summers, but also stated she doesn’t want to be linked to Joss Whedon indefinitely.

Old rumors reappeared suggesting Joss Whedon had romantic relationships with people who worked on his shows, and these were reportedly a factor in his 2012 divorce.

Joss Whedon responded to claims made by actors from the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, admitting he hadn’t acted appropriately during that time.

He admitted he was inexperienced. He explained that he often had to raise his voice, and with such a young group of actors, things could quickly become more social than productive.

He added in an interview he would never intentionally humiliate anyone.

I don’t want to upset anyone, and it would bother me if I did. I admit I can get frustrated, but I’ve never resorted to physical violence.

He vehemently denied Charisma’s claim that he had called her ‘fat’ while she was pregnant.

He claimed he didn’t understand what Trachtenberg meant by the rule forbidding them from being in the same room.

During the interview, he also expressed deep regret over allegations of affairs with actresses on set. He claimed he felt compelled to sleep with them and unable to stop himself.

Even back in 2017, four years before allegations surfaced from actors who worked with him, Joss Whedon’s former wife, Kai Cole, claimed he falsely presented himself as a feminist to cover up his manipulative behavior.

The director hasn’t worked in the industry since 2021, and many fans of the popular show Buffy believe the recent accusations have damaged its previously stellar reputation.

Problematic storylines

As a lifestyle expert, I remember when Buffy the Vampire Slayer first came out in the late 90s – it was a total game-changer! For one thing, it gave us a strong, capable female lead who could seriously kick butt. But beyond that, it was also incredibly progressive. Many people consider the relationship between Willow and Tara to be the first time we saw a consistent, ongoing same-sex couple featured on a TV show, and that was a huge moment for representation.

Over time, the show has faced increasing criticism for not being diverse enough and for portraying harmful stereotypes of masculinity through its male characters, some of whom were popular romantic leads.

Xander, the loyal best friend and comedic sidekick played by Nicholas Brendon, appeared to be a genuinely nice person, but he frequently harassed or stared at women he passed on the street.

Early in the first episode, Buffy accidentally drops her books, and Xander awkwardly offers to help, flusteredly asking, ‘Can I have you? Oh, I mean, can I help you?’ This clumsy and eager behavior becomes a recurring trait for his character. However, some modern viewers have criticized it as being anti-feminist.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the conversation around the women on this show, and it’s definitely ignited a lot of passion! People have very strong feelings, and it’s broken down to this: some viewers feel the portrayals are actually quite damaging and reinforce old stereotypes, while others believe these characters are strong and inspiring. It’s a really interesting debate, and honestly, I see both sides.

The sixth season of the show, known for sparking a lot of debate among fans, featured two main female characters who turned to destructive acts after experiencing personal loss, driven by a desire for revenge.

As a longtime fan, I have to admit some of the female characters went through really tough times, and back then, some people actually accused the show of being anti-woman. It was a painful criticism, but the creators finally spoke about it years later and explained their intentions.

Fans criticized how the characters were depicted, leading to backlash against both showrunner Marti Noxon and Joss Whedon, who then addressed the concerns on a fan forum.

Before social media was common, Joss Whedon addressed criticisms on the Buffy website’s message board, acknowledging some errors in the show’s production but defending his portrayal of female characters, stating he hadn’t overlooked them.

Okay, look, I love Joss, I really do. But honestly, it bothered me so much that the show didn’t have nearly enough diversity. It felt like there were so few people of color, and even when they did show up, it was usually just for an episode or two. It just…didn’t feel right, and it’s something I always wished he’d addressed more. I know he’s amazing, but that part always bugged me as a fan.

Aside from brief roles for Bianca Lawson as Kendra Young, a fellow Slayer who died after only three episodes, and Ara Celi as the Inca Mummy Girl in a single episode, the show largely lacked representation of women of color.

The seventh season of the show featured a more diverse group of characters with the addition of Potential Slayers – young women training to become slayers – though this happened near the very end of the series.

Viewers were also disturbed by a particularly shocking scene that aired, and many have complained about it.

In the “Seeing Red” episode from season six, Spike (played by James Marsters) tries to win back Buffy’s love. He desperately asks for her forgiveness after having a romantic encounter with her friend, Anya.

I was absolutely horrified watching the story unfold. After Spike finally finds her, instead of a sweet reunion, his longing takes a truly awful turn. He forces himself on her, and when she tries to stop him, he still attacks her. It’s a deeply disturbing and upsetting scene, and it completely ruined my view of his character.

A 60-second scene featuring Buffy struggling against a forceful Spike, who is trying to attack her, has upset many viewers. In the scene, Buffy is visibly distressed, screaming and crying, and fans on Reddit have labeled it as harmful and ‘toxic’.

When it was first released, the scene caused a stir. Over time, it’s become increasingly controversial due to its depiction of harmful masculine traits and its suggestion that abusive relationships are romantic.

The intense scene also deeply affected James, the actor who played Spike. He called filming it a ‘personal hell’ and later sought therapy to cope with the experience.

In an interview on Michael Rosenbaum’s ‘Inside of You’ podcast, the actor described a particular scene as ‘problematic’ for many fans and revealed it was the worst day he’d ever had at work.

He explained the idea came from a writing workshop where participants were encouraged to use personal, difficult experiences as the basis for their stories.

He explained that a female writer suggested the scene, inspired by her own experience. She’d gone back to her ex-boyfriend’s place after they broke up, hoping to rekindle things physically and undo the split.

James continued, explaining that she had desperately tried to stay, and he actually had to carry her out – a memory that remained deeply upsetting for her.

Honestly, I was so gutted to hear he didn’t love the story, but apparently, he was stuck with it! He said something about a contract forcing him to film, which, ugh, the studio! But still, he showed up, bless him. It just proves how dedicated he is, even when he’s not thrilled with the material. I mean, he’s amazing no matter what, but it still broke my heart a little to hear it wasn’t his favorite.

In a 2023 interview, Sarah, the star of the show, shared that she and her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., recently watched the series with their kids, Charlotte and Rocky. However, they chose to skip the episode titled ‘Seeing Red’.

In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she admitted she struggles to watch season six, explaining it didn’t feel right for the characters then and she prefers not to revisit it.
