If a popular fan theory about the villains in the new Mandalorian movie is correct, a classic Star Wars character will experience a major betrayal. With commercials during the Super Bowl, an official trailer, and even Grogu making a surprise appearance at the Academy Awards alongside Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver, the movie is being heavily promoted before its release on May 22nd.

I’ve been so excited seeing glimpses of villains in the trailers for the new season – those Imperial warlords looked menacing, and the Hutt twins from The Book of Boba Fett are always trouble! Even Embo the bounty hunter has me wondering what’s coming. But honestly, the biggest question for me is who the main bad guy will be! Everyone seems to think Grand Admiral Thrawn is the big threat for this time period, and they’re holding him back for Ahsoka season two and beyond. But I have a feeling we might have already seen a hint of who Din and Grogu will be facing next, and it’s really got me thinking!

Theory: Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward Is The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Secret Villain

Sigourney Weaver, known for her roles in science fiction films, joins the world of Star Wars in The Mandalorian & Grogu as Colonel Ward. A former member of the Rebel Alliance, Ward now works as a pilot and official for the New Republic. In the official trailer for the new season, she’s shown at Adelphi Base handing Din Djarin and Grogu identification cards for the Imperial leaders and criminals they’re tasked with tracking down. She also explains to them that their mission isn’t about getting even, but about stopping another war from happening.

This doesn’t mean Ward is secretly evil, but her introduction as a powerful, reliable, and mysterious character makes a villainous turn believable. Because Sigourney Weaver is famous for playing the heroic Ellen Ripley in the Alien films, audiences automatically trust her, which would make it especially shocking if she turned out to be working with the Imperial Remnant and Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Following 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the return of Star Wars to the big screen. However, the current villains – including Imperial warlords and the Hutt twins – feel too minor for such a significant comeback. A larger threat, like the character played by Weaver, would be a better fit, particularly given that the story takes place during a time when the New Republic is starting to fall apart internally.

Ward’s History With Leia & The Rebellion Would Make The Secret Villain Twist Devastating

As a fan, I’m honestly a little worried about Ward’s potential connection to the Imperial Remnant. Knowing his backstory – especially his history with Leia and the Rebellion – it would be heartbreaking if he was motivated by power, money, or even just disappointment with the New Republic. Apparently, Ward and Leia go way back, as actor Jude Weaver shared with Empire magazine. And Dave Filoni hinted that Ward is part of this incredible group of female Rebel leaders who really fought hard – alongside Leia, Mon Mothma, Hera Syndulla, and Amilyn Holdo. Weaver himself said it’s a huge honor to play someone who was a contemporary and colleague of these iconic characters, so it would be a real shame if he ended up on the wrong side now.

If Ward is secretly working against them, he’d be betraying not only Din and Grogu, but also Leia and the other brave women who were key to defeating the Empire. These women – Leia, Mon, Hera, and Holdo – are still leaders, with Mon even serving as chancellor of the New Republic. Ward’s actions could damage their reputations and weaken the new government, which is particularly dangerous now that Thrawn has returned, as seen at the end of Ahsoka season one.

The character Ward’s past hints at a possible connection to the original Star Wars trilogy in The Mandalorian and Grogu. While the movie will likely center on Din Djarin and Grogu, Ward’s story could become more important if she turns out to be a villain. If she isn’t the antagonist, it raises questions about who the film’s true villain will be, and whether it’s someone we’ve already met.
