Roofman Is a Crime Comedy Based on a True Story

Channing Tatum’s character is based on a real person who was a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division before becoming known for robbing several McDonald’s restaurants. His military background influenced how he committed the crimes; he would carefully plan the robberies and then break in by drilling through the roof, usually at night or in the early morning.

He became known as the “Roofman” because of his unusual method: he’d break into McDonald’s restaurants, hide inside a bathroom or secure area, and then rob the cash registers after locking the employees in the walk-in freezer. Over the course of his crimes, he’s believed to have robbed between 40 and 60 McDonald’s locations nationwide.

Manchester was first arrested in 2000, but he broke out of prison in 2004. He was caught again in 2005 after robbing a Toys “R” Us, where he had been hiding since his escape. He is now serving a 40-year prison sentence.

Okay, so the cast is really solid. Kirsten Dunst is fantastic as Leigh, a Toys “R” Us employee who catches Jeff’s eye. LaKeith Stanfield is also great as Steve, a fellow army man and Jeff’s old sergeant. And Juno Temple, who you might recognize from Ted Lasso, plays Steve’s girlfriend, Michelle. Peter Dinklage shows up as the manager of the Toys “R” Us – he really adds a lot to the scenes he’s in.
