It’s still nine months until the new Dune movie comes out, but Warner Bros. just released a trailer to give fans a sneak peek!
The trailer for “Dune: Part Three,” set almost twenty years after the second movie, hints at continued political conflict, a dangerous new enemy, and the future child of Paul and Chani.
Zendaya and Javier Bardem, stars of “Dune,” joined director Denis Villeneuve to share the trailer for the final film in his sci-fi trilogy. Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson, who are new to the cast, were also at the AMC event. Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, and Jason Momoa couldn’t be there in person, but they sent video messages.
Villeneuve remarked during the event, which featured a cast Q&A and received a huge ovation from the audience, that it felt more like a movie premiere than a trailer launch.
Zendaya, who plays the character Chani – a fierce warrior from the desert planet Arrakis – shared how much the films mean to her. She explained that she’s spent most of her twenties working on them, making them a deeply personal and cherished part of her life.
Here’s everything to know about “Dune: Part Three.”
‘Dune: Part Two’ stirs its sands darkly, deepening a sci-fi masterpiece in our midst
The first part of Denis Villeneuve’s visually stunning Dune saga reaches a powerful and exciting climax as Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler face off.
What is ‘Dune 3’ about?
The last movie in the trilogy takes place 17 years after the previous one, but the trailer suggests the conflict and political issues on Arrakis and elsewhere are still ongoing.
Timothée Chalamet, as Paul Atreides, is now facing the challenges of ruling as emperor after overthrowing the Harkonnens. He’s also grappling with the expectations placed upon him as a messianic figure to the Fremen people.
The latest trailer suggests Paul and Chani might have a child together in the future. Though they seemed like a couple in the first film, they were separated by the end of the second when Paul married Princess Irulan (played by Florence Pugh). This marriage was a strategic political decision meant to solidify his claim to the throne.
× The trailer shows Chani asking Paul about naming their future daughter, suggesting they might get back together. During a video message shown at the event, Florence Pugh, who plays Princess Irulan, questioned Zendaya about what her character thinks of Paul’s marriage to Irulan, referencing the film’s love triangle.
“Everyone will have to experience it for themselves – it’s going to be an incredible ride,” Zendaya shared at the event.
Director Denis Villeneuve says the third movie is fundamentally a love story, with the connection between Paul and Chani remaining central to the plot, as reported by Deadline.
The trailer hints at ongoing conflicts within this universe, even long after Paul rises to power as emperor.
When will ‘Dune 3’ be released?
The final installment of the trilogy will hit theaters Dec. 18.
The upcoming movie, “Dune: Part Three,” will be based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s “Dune” series, “Dune Messiah.” The previous two films covered the events of the first book.
Denis Villeneuve originally intended to move on from the “Dune” series, but the enthusiastic response to the 2024 release of the second film made him feel obligated to complete the story, he explained at the trailer launch. The first two movies were both major successes, earning over $1.1 billion globally. The second film won two Academy Awards, while the first received six Oscars, mostly for its technical achievements.
The third film “is a very different movie,” Villeneuve said during Monday’s event.
He explained that revisiting these stories shouldn’t be about looking back fondly, but about a sense of immediate need. He described the first film as thoughtful and exploratory, the second as a war story, and this new one as a fast-paced, suspenseful thriller – much more intense and driven by action.
What have ‘Dune’ stars said about the film?
Timothée Chalamet introduced the trailer with a video message, calling Denis Villeneuve’s latest film “a true cinematic experience.”
Chalamet credited Denis Villeneuve as the driving force behind the film, stating, “This movie wouldn’t have happened without him.” He added that many others share his gratitude for Villeneuve’s commitment to realizing both the ‘Dune’ films and now the complete trilogy.
Jason Momoa, who played Duncan Idaho in the first Dune movie before his character died, will be back for the third film. Anya Taylor-Joy, who made a short appearance in the second movie, will reprise her role as Paul’s sister, Alia.
Robert Pattinson will play the villain Scytale, a character who can change his shape. He revealed he landed the role only a few months after jokingly asking Zendaya how he could get involved in “Dune” while they were filming their movie “The Drama,” which comes out April 3rd.
Pattinson praised Denis, saying everyone enjoys working with him and considers him a true master. He explained that the impressive quality of the films is evident even on set, due to their grand scope and ambitious vision. He described the overall effect as ‘extraordinary’.
