The season one finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy included a key element inspired by a classic television show featuring Robert Picardo. The episode, titled “Rubincon,” was directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and written by Alex Kurtzman, Kirsten Beyer, Noga Landau, and Gaia Violo.
The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ended with the cadets successfully stopping Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) from destroying the United Federation of Planets. Though still new to their training, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner), Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard), Darem Reymi (George Hawkins), SAM (Kerrice Brooks), and Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané) worked together to save the Federation.
So, I was reading Gold Derby, and they had a chat with Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, the folks running Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. They were talking about the season one finale, and Noga Landau let slip something really interesting. Apparently, the whole idea of the cadets taking command of the USS Athena came straight from an episode of The Wonder Years called “Graduation.” She said it was a big inspiration for that scene!
I vividly remember watching that episode when I was younger and thinking how terrifying – but exciting – it would be to drive for the first time. We really wanted to recreate that feeling in this episode – that mix of youthful eagerness and being unprepared, but still wanting to pursue a lifelong dream. For these characters, that dream is taking command of a spaceship’s bridge. They’re thrown into the situation before they’re fully ready, but they have to rise to the occasion and make it work.
In the fourth season finale of The Wonder Years, titled “Graduation,” Kevin Arnold and his friends finished junior high school. During the episode, Kevin unexpectedly had to drive his pregnant teacher to the hospital – his very first time driving without a license. Noga Landau drew inspiration from Kevin’s selfless act when developing a storyline for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, focusing on how the cadets overcome a difficult challenge and succeed.
Interestingly, Robert Picardo appeared on The Wonder Years long before becoming famous as The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager, and now on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He played Coach Cutlip in 15 episodes of The Wonder Years and even received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for the role.
Fans of both The Wonder Years and Star Trek might recognize Olivia d’Abo. She played Kevin Arnold’s free-spirited older sister, Karen, on The Wonder Years, and later appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation as Amanda Rogers, who eventually became a Q. This episode, titled “True Q,” aired during the sixth season.
The first season finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy brought together three Emmy-winning actors: Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and Tatiana Maslany. Adding to the Emmy pedigree, Robert Picardo was nominated for his work on the classic series The Wonder Years, which itself won an Emmy in 1988 as Outstanding Comedy Series, along with awards for its writing and direction.
Many Star Trek fans worried that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would be similar to typical teen shows like Beverly Hills 90210. However, the show actually honored Star Trek‘s tradition of compelling characters and engaging stories. Writer Noga Landau used inspiration from The Wonder Years to create a setting where the young cadets learned to overcome their lack of experience through science, collaboration, and bravery.
