Marvel and Sony haven’t revealed what role Sydney Sweeney will play in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. There’s been a lot of speculation, with fans suggesting she could be characters like Black Cat, Gwen Stacy, or Mary Jane Watson. Some rumors even point to a Marvel character outside of the Spider-Man universe, like Jean Grey, which would connect to the future X-Men films. Currently, the Jean Grey possibility is the most talked-about theory.

Fans have created art imagining Sadie Sink, the star of Stranger Things, as the Marvel character Jean Grey. The artwork shows her wearing Jean Grey’s classic yellow and green costume, complete with a large yellow phoenix symbol on the chest. It also depicts Sink’s character using Jean Grey’s powers, with energy visibly charging in her hands and her levitating in the air.
I’ve been seeing some incredible fan art of Sadie Sink as a potential Marvel character, and it honestly looks so right! It got me thinking, maybe we won’t have to wait long to see if that vision is accurate. Tom Holland just announced that the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is dropping tomorrow, March 18th, and I’m hoping we’ll get a glimpse of her then!
Leading up to the official trailer, Sony is taking a unique approach by sharing short clips from Spider-Man: Brand New Day with Marvel fans around the world throughout the day. As of right now, the character played by Maya Hawke hasn’t appeared in any of the released teasers. But that could change before the full trailer is revealed, as she’s expected to be featured in it.
Before landing a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sadie Sink was a strong contender to play Jean Grey for Marvel. This makes her potential casting in the 2026 film seem likely, especially since reports suggest she’s also returning for Avengers: Secret Wars. That suggests she’ll have a significant part to play in the movie.
As a huge Marvel fan, I think introducing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and then having her play a big role in Avengers: Secret Wars – especially since that’s where the MCU is supposedly getting a fresh start and introducing the X-Men – would be absolutely brilliant. It would give her two really strong appearances before we even get to the first X-Men movie, building her up perfectly!
Not only does actress Sink resemble the character, but she’s also proven she can capture the empathetic, strong-willed, and determined personality needed for the role. However, some worry the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be a more grounded, street-level story, which doesn’t quite fit Jean Grey’s character or her connection to the Spider-Man universe. Hopefully, the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day will clarify things and put these concerns to rest.
