The film F1: The Movie continues to be the most-watched title on streaming services more than a month after it came out, and it’s likely to gain even more viewers as award season heats up. It’s hard to think of another sports documentary that has had as big an impact on its sport as F1: Drive to Survive has had on Formula 1 racing.
The story of Formula One racing is a classic sports narrative – a seasoned, down-on-his-luck driver gets the chance to mentor a promising newcomer. Its popularity is evident in the fact that major stars like Joseph Kosinski, Brad Pitt, and Kerry Condon collaborated to bring it to the big screen. The movie was both a critical and commercial success, and continues to gain new viewers.
F1: The Movie Is Apple TV’s Most Successful Original Film

It took Apple TV a while to start consistently making good original movies. They’ve had success with TV shows, but their films have been more inconsistent. However, they’ve definitely had some wins, like with films such as Killers of the Flower Moon and documentaries like F1.
With $631 million earned worldwide, F1 is Apple TV’s biggest box office hit to date. It ranked as the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the most successful release from Apple Studios (according to BoxOfficeMojo). Despite a production cost estimated between $200 and $300 million, the film’s earnings are still very strong (via Deadline).
F1: The Movie’s Best Picture Nomination Will Make It Even More Popular
Okay, so the Oscar nominations for 2026 are here, and I was genuinely shocked to see F1: The Movie up for Best Picture! It’s not that it’s a bad film – it’s actually pretty good, with an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes – but when you look at the other nominees like One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Hamnet, it just feels a little… different. It definitely stands out from the more traditionally ‘Oscar-bait’ movies this year.
The ten films nominated are a mix of popular, mainstream hits, which is great for raising awareness of F1. Now that the movie is an Oscar contender, Apple TV will likely increase its promotion, leading to even more people discovering this exciting sports drama.
A Sequel To F1 Looks More Likely Than Ever

Most movies don’t perform as well as F1 did, unless they’re directed by someone like James Cameron. Expecting them to is usually a path to being let down. While a sequel to F1 probably wasn’t considered much at the film’s premiere, that’s almost certainly changed now.
Reports suggest Apple is beginning to develop a follow-up film (according to Variety). The movie F1: The Movie concludes with both Joshua (played by Damson Idris) and Sonny (played by Pitt) enjoying success in their personal lives and careers. This often signals in the film industry that the characters are poised for a new story with fresh challenges.
