The cruel irony behind Diane Warren’s 17th Oscars snub after she broke the record for longest losing streak: ‘Well, at least I’m consistent!’

Diane Warren failed to shake off her Oscars curse at the 2026 ceremony.

The 69-year-old American songwriter received his 17th nomination at this year’s awards, but unfortunately didn’t win.

She first gained recognition from the Academy Awards in 1987 with the song “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the movie Mannequin. More recently, she was nominated for an award eight years in a row, from 2018 to 2025.

This actor now has the most nominations of any performer who hasn’t won an award, surpassing the previous record of 16 nominations held by sound mixer Greg P. Russell.

Immediately following the event, Diane expressed her frustration online with a sarcastic comment: ‘I guess I consistently don’t win!’

While she can make a joke about it, there is a cruel irony behind her most recent loss.

Diane was nominated in the Best Original Song category for the song Dear Me.

It’s performed by Kesha in the documentary about the songwriter’s career, Diane Warren: Relentless.

The documentary showcases her incredible drive to write successful songs and tells the story of her remarkable career as a highly accomplished songwriter who doesn’t perform herself.

The film also dwells on Diane’s repeated Oscar snubs, a painful reminder for the songwriter of her recent disappointment and a pattern of being overlooked.

The song Dear Me, which features in the documentary, was a track Diane wrote for her younger self.

She told USA Today she wanted to reach out to her younger self—the girl who was bullied, ridiculed, and constantly told she wasn’t good enough—and reassure her that everything would be alright.

Unfortunately, it didn’t win at the ceremony. Ejae, Ido, and Teddy Park won the award for their song “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters.

Following her loss, fans took to X to highlight how the parallels in her documentary continue.

People are commenting on the irony of Diane Warren being nominated for an Oscar for a song from a documentary about her history of being nominated for Oscars but never winning. They joke it feels like a plot point from the shows ’30 Rock’ or ‘The Other Two’.

It’s ironic that Diane Warren’s song, nominated for an Oscar this year, comes from a documentary detailing her repeated Oscar losses for, well, songs like this one.

Diane Warren is incredibly talented, but she deserves an Oscar! It feels like she’s always writing songs for smaller, less-noticed films, and if a major director like Chloe Zhao, Ryan Coogler, or Christopher Nolan asked her to contribute to one of their projects, she’d finally get the recognition she deserves.

It’s amazing how the Academy consistently nominates Diane Warren for an Oscar, yet she’s never won one – it’s quite a story!

‘Brace yourselves for Diane Warren 2: Relentless Forever’,

Diane Warren seems to have anticipated the music needed for a movie about her life, even before making one – that’s dedication to her craft!

Diane’s involvement with the Oscars dates back to 1987, when she didn’t win for “The Time Of My Life” from Dirty Dancing. This loss marked the beginning of a noteworthy pattern – and a lot of Oscar talk – that would continue for years to come.

She then listed three of her biggest successes: “Because You Loved Me” with Celine Dion (1996), “How Do I Live” with Trisha Yearwood (1997), and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” with Aerosmith (1998). Despite being nominated, none of these songs won an Academy Award.

She continued to receive award nominations into the 2000s, including recognition for the songs “Music of My Heart” (featured in the film of the same name and performed by Gloria Estefan and NSYNC in 1999) and “There You’ll Be” (from the movie Pearl Harbor, performed by Faith Hill in 2001).

Diane made a comeback to the Oscars in 2014 with the song “Grateful” from the film Beyond the Lights, which was performed by Rita Ora.

The next year, Lady Gaga’s performance of “Til It Happens to You” from the film The Hunting Ground received an award nomination.

In 2017, Stand Up for Something from Marshall, performed by Common, lost to Remember Me from Coco.

The following year, she received an award nomination for “I’ll Fight” from RBG, sung by Jennifer Hudson. Then, the year after that, she was nominated again for “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough, performed by Chrissy Metz.

She received award nominations for the songs “Io sì (Seen)” from the film The Life Ahead (sung by Laura Pausini in 2020), “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days (sung by Reba McEntire), and “Applause” from Tell It Like a Woman (sung by Sofia Carson) in subsequent years.

Diane received an honorary Oscar at the Governors’ Awards in 2022 for her impact on music.

I was so thrilled to see her work nominated again in 2023! She had two songs in the running: “The Fire Inside” by Becky G, and then the next year, “The Journey” performed by H.E.R. Both were fantastic and I was really rooting for her!

Diane recently expressed sadness that her song won’t be featured in a performance at the 2026 Oscars.

Warren said it would have been wonderful if Kesha could have performed the song, calling it a potentially amazing moment. He acknowledged he didn’t have any say in the decision, but reiterated how great it would have been, according to a USA Today report from Friday’s Women in Film Oscar nominees event.

She was talking about the Academy’s unpopular choice to showcase only two of the nominated songs during this year’s ceremony.

Before the Oscars on Sunday, Warren admitted to ABC News that receiving the honorary Oscar was a huge honor – even more difficult to achieve than a competitive one – and something he didn’t take lightly. However, he still hoped to win a competitive Oscar.

‘My honorary Oscar gets really lonely. He wants a friend.’

After losing, she shared a message on social media saying she was proud to be consistent and had even set a new record that night. She ended by saying she’d be back if her fans wanted her to.
