Kyle Sandilands has said that he is ready to return to work – if ARN want him.
The radio station has until Tuesday night to decide whether to bring back the controversial host, as his two-week suspension finishes then.
After filming Australian Idol on Tuesday, Kyle Sandilands told McKnight Tonight that he expects to be back on the radio tomorrow morning, barring any unexpected changes.
Despite recent changes, I haven’t lost my job. My contract is still valid, and I’m ready and willing to do the radio show tomorrow, if they want me to,” the 54-year-old explained.
We’re still waiting to find out, as we haven’t received any updates. I’m hoping to have news by midnight, which will let us know what’s going on.
I’m eager to return to work, and my audience seems to want me back too. I’ve received a lot of requests from clients asking me to resume my services. I need to confirm if everyone’s expectations are aligned before I make a decision.
Kyle said he’s open to doing the show, as long as he’s chosen to be on it. He’s waiting to see what happens and acknowledged things could change by tomorrow.
When asked how his mental health was holding up, Sandilands was nonplussed.
He shared that even his close friend, Johnny Ibrahim, checked in on him today. When Johnny asked how he was doing, he initially replied that he was fine. But Johnny specifically asked about his mental health, which made him laugh. He reassured Johnny that he was doing okay mentally as well.
My wife even told me I was handling things remarkably well, and I realized I don’t usually fall apart when faced with challenges. I’ve overcome much bigger obstacles – I was a homeless teenager, after all. I’ve dealt with far tougher situations, and I just focus on dealing with one thing at a time.
Kyle caused some concern for the show’s censors on Tuesday night when he unexpectedly deviated from the script during a live broadcast of Australian Idol.
Radio executives at ARN were concerned that Kyle Sandilands might say something inappropriate once he was no longer broadcasting live as part of the reality show. Those worries proved to be justified, as Sandilands quickly used his show on KIIS FM to publicly complain about issues.
He started by speaking to host Ricki-Lee Coulter, then suggested he might lose his job because his suspension from ARN ends at midnight on Tuesday.
‘Today, Ricki, I’ve got nothing else on my mind except the excitement of the vote,’ Kyle joked.
He gestured to his sharp black suit, playfully suggesting he was dressed to impress in hopes of getting a job at the men’s clothing store, Lowes.
‘I’m also dressed like this because I have a job interview with Lowes after the show,’ Kyle said.
‘The radio guys… once you’re out of radio you have to sell socks at Lowes.’
Sandilands checked his watch and continued, ‘As long as I have this job, I’ll also keep my other one.’
Fellow judge Amy Shark suggested that she could be a reference for Kyle if he needed a new job.
‘I might take you up on that,’ Sandilands quipped.
The radio personality briefly addressed the public outside his Vaucluse home on Tuesday afternoon before heading to film Australian Idol.
Kyle spoke to reporters and said he wants to keep doing The Kyle and Jackie O Show. However, he acknowledged that it’s still uncertain whether he’ll stay at KIIS FM, as ARN has given him until midnight to make a decision.
Despite saying he was doing well, the popular radio host revealed that his contract with the network is still up in the air.
‘I obviously can’t say too much because I haven’t heard anything yet,’ Kyle said.
I’m still committed to doing the show. My audience wants me to continue, and I have a contract with ARN that I expect them to uphold. I’m also exploring my other possibilities.
When asked about potential choices, Kyle, with his manager Bruno Bouchet present, simply said, “I don’t know yet, but there are a lot of possibilities.”
Sandilands was then asked if rumours that he plans to buy ARN are true.
He simply stated there were numerous possibilities, adding that he couldn’t offer any predictions and was still awaiting further developments. His response was deliberately vague.
Kyle avoided answering questions about whether he’d talked to his former co-host, Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, and quickly left when asked.
Last month, the Australian Radio Network (ARN) ended Jackie ‘O’ Henderson’s $100 million contract. This decision came after Henderson informed executives she could no longer work with Kyle Sandilands, following his on-air remarks that upset her deeply.
ARN sent Sandilands a written notice explaining they believe his actions on the February 20th show were a serious violation of the agreement between ARN and Quasar Media.
Sandilands has been temporarily suspended and has 14 days to fix the issue that led to the suspension. If he doesn’t, he could be fired.
That deadline is believed to end at midnight on Tuesday.
