Kyle Sandilands caused a bit of a stir on Tuesday night’s Australian Idol when he unexpectedly went off-script during the live broadcast.
Radio network ARN was concerned the controversial host would say something inappropriate once he wasn’t bound by the live broadcasts of the reality show, and those worries proved somewhat correct when he immediately began complaining about KIIS FM on air.
The 54-year-old started by speaking to host Ricki-Lee Coulter, and then suggested he might lose his job, as his suspension from ARN ends at midnight on Tuesday.
‘Today, Ricki, I’ve got nothing else on my mind except the excitement of the vote,’ Kyle joked.
He gestured to his sharp black suit, playfully suggesting he was dressed to impress in hopes of getting a job at the menswear store, Lowes.
‘I’m also dressed like this because I have a job interview with Lowes after the show,’ Kyle said.
‘The radio guys… once you’re out of radio you have to sell socks at Lowes.’
Sandilands checked the time and explained, ‘I’m currently working both this job and my other one.’
Fellow judge Amy Shark suggested that she could be a reference for Kyle if he needed a new job.
‘I might take you up on that,’ Sandilands quipped.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I was actually there this morning! I saw him – him! – leaving his house in Vaucluse. He gave a quick statement, it wasn’t long, but it was enough! He was heading to the Australian Idol set, and I just… I couldn’t believe my eyes! It was the most amazing thing ever!
Speaking to reporters, Kyle said he’s eager to keep doing The Kyle and Jackie O Show, but his position at KIIS FM is uncertain. He’s waiting for a final decision from ARN, which is expected by midnight.
Despite saying he was doing well, the popular radio host revealed that his future with the network is still uncertain and his contract hasn’t been finalized.
‘I obviously can’t say too much because I haven’t heard anything yet,’ Kyle said.
I’m still committed to doing the show, and my audience wants me to continue. Ultimately, I have a contract with ARN, and I expect them to fulfill it. I’m also exploring my other possibilities.
When asked about potential choices, Kyle, with his manager Bruno Bouchet present, simply said, ‘I haven’t figured that out yet, but there are a lot of possibilities.’
Sandilands was then asked if rumours that he plans to buy ARN are true.
He simply stated there were numerous possibilities, adding that he couldn’t foresee what would happen and was still awaiting further developments. His response was intentionally vague.
Kyle avoided answering questions about whether he’d talked to his former co-host, Jackie ‘O’ Henderson, and quickly left when asked.
Last month, the Australian Radio Network (ARN) ended Jackie ‘O’ Henderson’s $100 million contract. This decision came after she informed executives she could no longer work with Kyle Sandilands, following his on-air remarks that upset her greatly.
ARN sent Sandilands a written notice explaining they believe his actions on the February 20th show were a serious violation of the agreement between ARN and Quasar Media.
Sandilands has been temporarily suspended and has 14 days to fix the issue that led to the suspension. If he doesn’t resolve it by Tuesday at midnight, he could be fired.
Just before Sandilands arrived, Henderson was seen looking quite sad in Bondi.
After the recent cancellation of his show, Sandilands reportedly hired lawyers and is threatening to sue ARN if they end his $100 million contract.
Last Tuesday, Sandilands publicly stated that ARN had silenced him, preventing him from communicating with Henderson or his coworkers.
ARN informed me that I’m prohibited from contacting Jackie and speaking with my colleagues. I complied with their request, even though it prevented me from doing what anyone in my role would naturally do – communicating with the person I’ve worked with consistently throughout my career, as that’s how I’ve always done my job, he said.
ARN fired Jackie and accused me of wrongdoing on the very same day. They also suspended me from my job, all while instructing me to remain silent and not discuss the situation. This clearly wasn’t a fair or honest process.
Kyle Sandilands sparked a lot of speculation after a surprising meeting he had over the weekend, especially considering the uncertainty surrounding his career.
He had a meeting with Stu Laundy, whose father, Arthur Laundy – a billionaire – recently purchased Nine Entertainment’s radio stations, which include 2GB in Sydney, 3AW in Melbourne, 4BC in Brisbane, and 6PR in Perth.
The meeting, held at Sandilands’ offices in McMahons Point, became even more interesting when the radio personality arrived with his manager, Bouchet.
The meeting sparked rumors that Sandilands might be looking for radio opportunities with a network other than ARN.
