Hulu has officially canceled plans for a video game series that fans were eagerly anticipating. The project, which had been in the works since 2017, will no longer be developed, according to the writer involved.
Hitman based series is dead in the water
Filmmaker Derek Kolstad recently told The Direct that plans for a Hitman television series are no longer moving forward. When asked if the project was still possible, he stated it was effectively canceled.
So, I was really excited when I first heard about a Perfect Dark TV series back in late 2017. Derek Kolstad, the guy who masterminded the John Wick movies, was going to be the writer and an executive producer, and Hulu was set to make it happen with Fox 21. He was even supposed to write the first episode! But unfortunately, that pilot episode never actually got made, and the whole thing just stalled out. It’s a shame, because I thought Kolstad was a perfect fit for that world.
It really hurts that the project isn’t moving forward,” Kolstad confessed. “These things are tough to predict, but it seems stalled right now. I’m still very passionate about the story and the character, but the issue is, having a script isn’t enough. Someone needs to actually produce it – make a movie or a show. Unfortunately, that’s just not happening at the moment.
The recently canceled Hulu series is just one of many video game adaptations that haven’t been produced, even though the games themselves remain popular. Hitman, which first launched in 2000, is a well-known stealth game where players control Agent 47, a skilled and genetically modified assassin.
Although a TV series never materialized, the Hitman franchise has been brought to the big screen twice, but both attempts were poorly received. The 2007 film, starring Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47, received a very low 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A 2015 reboot, Hitman: Agent 47, with Rupert Friend as the lead, tried to stay true to the character’s backstory as a clone, but critics disliked it even more, giving it just an 8% score.
