According to Deadline, Hulu has canceled the planned ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale’ series, even though they had already finished the pilot episode and many anticipated it would be picked up for a full season.

The show, which was going to star Sarah Michelle Gellar and be directed by Chloé Zhao, underwent a rewrite that everyone at the studio liked. Despite this, Disney Television Group’s Craig Erwich unexpectedly told the producers on a Friday night that the project was cancelled.

As a huge Buffy fan, I was really excited when I heard Hulu picked up a pilot a year ago – it was the result of years of trying to bring the show back! They cast Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, which felt like a great way to continue the story. Unfortunately, after seeing the pilot, Hulu felt it didn’t quite hit the mark – they thought it was geared towards a younger audience and lacked scope. So, the writers, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, went back to the drawing board and created a longer, 90-minute version with a stronger focus on Buffy herself. Hopefully, that’s what the show needed!

According to insiders, both 20th Television and Searchlight Television liked the new version of the script, and there was talk of moving forward with the show. However, ultimately, Erwich decided not to proceed with the project. The reasons appear to be a combination of budget concerns – the revised script was reportedly too costly – and creative concerns, with some feeling it didn’t live up to the quality of the original series.

Gellar was surprised by the show’s cancellation, noting even Searchlight’s leader didn’t anticipate it. She received the news right before going on stage at SXSW. According to PEOPLE, she also revealed that one of their executives openly disliked the original series, even boasting about never having watched it and finding it unappealing. This executive has been identified as Erwich.

Many people criticized the decision’s timing, describing it as a mistake and poorly considered. They also pointed out that there wasn’t any urgent reason to make it, as they could have waited for results before acting.
