Michael Mann’s acclaimed historical drama, The Last of the Mohicans, is currently very popular on streaming services. According to FlixPatrol, it’s the sixth most-watched movie on both Tubi in the U.S. and Paramount+ in the UK and Ireland.
Michael Mann directed The Last of the Mohicans, a film based on the 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper and co-written with Christopher Crowe. The movie stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye, and follows his adventures during the French and Indian War as he gets caught up in the conflict between the British and French armies.
In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis, The Last of the Mohicans features Russell Means as Chingachgook, Hawkeye’s adoptive father, and Eric Schweig as his adoptive brother, Uncas. The cast also includes Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May, Steven Waddington, Patrice Chéreau, Wes Studi, Tracey Ellis, Terry Kinney, and Maurice Roëves.
When The Last of the Mohicans came out in 1992, it was a huge commercial success, earning over $143 million despite only costing $40 million to make. The film was also highly praised by critics, receiving 19 award nominations and winning six, including an Academy Award for Best Sound, which was awarded to Chris Jenkins, Doug Hemphill, Mark Smith, and Simon Kaye.
Even decades after it first came out, The Last of the Mohicans remains popular with audiences. As of today, Rotten Tomatoes reports a high approval rating, with both critics and viewers giving it an 88% score based on over 126 professional reviews and more than 100,000 user ratings.
What’s Next for The Last of the Mohicans Writer-Director Michael Mann?
I’m really excited about the new movie that’s starting production in August! It’s based on Michael Mann’s novel, and it’s fascinating because the book actually expands on his famous film Heat, acting as both a backstory and a continuation of the original story.
I’m really excited about this upcoming film, slated for release around late 2025. The director has said it’s going to be something completely unique, though they’re still in the early stages of development. They’ve mentioned it’ll definitely be inspired by Heat, almost like a continuation of that story. DiCaprio has also talked about how the source material is already public, so he’s not giving anything away, but it’s going to jump between a futuristic setting and the events of what he considers the best crime film ever made.
The Last of the Mohicans is currently available for streaming on Tubi and Paramount+.
