When people stayed home during the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services became incredibly popular. Many turned to movies and shows on these platforms for entertainment. At the same time, medical thrillers gained a lot of attention because their storylines felt particularly relevant. These shows, especially medical dramas, were a perfect way to pass the time during lockdowns.
Medical thrillers have become increasingly popular recently, as shown by the success of shows like The Pitt, which received numerous nominations and awards during its first season. While these shows were especially in demand during the COVID-19 lockdowns, that level of popularity hasn’t continued since then.
During the lockdowns, intense medical thrillers became incredibly popular, likely because they mirrored what people were experiencing. While movies about the COVID-19 pandemic, like Eddington, are currently gaining attention, the broader category of pandemic-themed films isn’t fully appreciated. Interestingly, a compelling movie exploring similar themes was released almost ten years before COVID-19, and it’s especially unsettling to watch now.
Perfect Sense Is An Apocalyptic Romance Movie
David Mackenzie’s film, Perfect Sense, takes place in present-day Glasgow and tells the story of how an unexplained illness impacts people’s lives. While the cause and spread of the disease remain a mystery, it quickly becomes a worldwide epidemic, despite early reports that it wasn’t contagious. Interestingly, the illness doesn’t directly kill anyone.
Eva Green stars as Susan, a doctor who, along with her team, first identifies a new disease after patients begin losing their sense of smell. Though initially unsure if it spreads easily, she quickly understands how serious the illness is and accepts she will likely get infected, so she begins preparing for life with it.
Ewan McGregor stars as Michael, a chef who lives across the street from Susan. Initially confident and lighthearted, he begins to change after meeting her and finds himself wanting to get to know her better. As he deals with the challenges of losing his sense of smell – a major issue for a chef – his relationship with Susan deepens in ways he didn’t expect.
Perfect Sense’s Disease Is Eerily Similar to COVID
The loss of smell is something many people likely remember experiencing with COVID-19. It’s remarkable that this film, released in 2011, featured it as a key symptom – years before the virus became a global pandemic. This makes watching Perfect Sense feel strangely unsettling and prescient.
The film’s look at how an epidemic impacts people’s mental well-being – even if it isn’t deadly – feels more relatable now than it would have a few years ago, while the COVID-19 pandemic was still happening. Watching it now brings back memories of that time, making the experience both poignant and a little sad.
Ewan McGregor And Eva Green Have Great Chemistry
A great romance movie lives or dies by the connection between its stars, and Ewan McGregor and Eva Green have incredible chemistry. They beautifully convey a shared sense of sadness, and a feeling of impending doom constantly looms over their blossoming love story, filled with reminders of what they might lose.
The actors create a powerful sense of longing and sadness through subtle looks and touches. While their characters are clearly heartbroken, a deep love still shines through. Green and McGregor convincingly portray how their characters lean on each other for support while facing a devastating epidemic.
The Social Commentary In Perfect Sense Is Evocative
Eva Green narrates the film with a thoughtful, calming voice, explaining the unfolding epidemic and how people respond. She considers how losing our senses affects how we understand the world and maintain our identity. This part of the film, about sensory loss, feels especially relevant and impactful now.
Seeing how people either give up or desperately try to act normal, even with everything falling apart, really brings back memories of the pandemic. Even though I was safe and sheltered, the feeling of impending disaster was still very strong.
Perfect Sense Should Have Become More Popular In Recent Years
Movies about pandemics and epidemics became very popular during the COVID-19 crisis, as people connected with their realistic portrayals. However, one film, Perfect Sense, hasn’t received the attention it deserves. It features beautiful, though admittedly dark, visuals and powerful acting that truly stand out and deserve more recognition.
Perfect Sense powerfully portrays the experience of living through an epidemic, capturing the sense of isolation and disruption as life carries on around those fearing illness. It’s a deeply affecting and tragic film, made even more poignant by the beautiful and often overlooked romance between Ewan McGregor and Eva Green’s characters.
