Darth Maul is equipped with a new weapon in his Disney+ series, Maul – Shadow Lord. First appearing in Episode I: The Phantom Menace as the apprentice of Darth Sidious, he was famously defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi. But that wasn’t the end for Maul, who remarkably survived and returned seeking revenge in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.
The new Maul series takes place between the animated shows and focuses on what happens after the Emperor’s former apprentice tries to rebuild his criminal organization and get revenge on those who betrayed him. The recent trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord reveals that Maul is determined to make the Empire pay for leaving him for dead, and he believes he “needs a weapon” to do so.
They tried to destroy me, the Empire did. It feels like the ultimate betrayal, and honestly, I believe they need to face the repercussions of their actions. To make that happen, we need something… a powerful tool, a weapon to ensure justice is served.
As Maul says these lines in the trailer, the clip suggests his target is Twi’lek Jedi Devon Izara. Like Maul, Izara is hiding from the Empire, forced into secrecy after Order 66 wiped out the Jedi Order. The trailer shows Maul trapping Izara and offering, “Together we can destroy the Empire.”

Later in the trailer, Izara shares her worries with Master Eeko-Dio-Daki about working with Maul. “He wants to team up,” Izara explains. Her Master cautions her, “The Empire might be a shared threat, but Maul will never truly be an ally.”

In the Maul – Shadow Lord story arc, Devon Izara struggles with the pull towards the Dark Side, which is central to her character. Star Wars’ official description of Izara highlights that she is “conflicted” and will have to adjust to a very different future than the one she originally envisioned.

This likely foreshadows Izara’s transformation from a Jedi to a Sith, as Maul asks her to join him as an apprentice. He plans to use their combined strength to fight against the Empire.

The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, is set in the futuristic city of Janix. It follows Maul as he tries to stay hidden from detective Brander Lawson. Sam Witwer returns to voice Maul, and the cast also includes Wagner Moura, Gideon Adlon, Richard Ayoade, and Dennis Haysbert. You can start watching on Disney+ from April 6th.
Why Devon Izara Is So Important to Maul

I’m really captivated by where the story picks up with Maul in Shadow Lord. He’s completely on his own, a lone wolf after losing his brother, Savage Opress, to Darth Sidious during The Clone Wars. It’s clear he has big plans – taking down the Empire and rebuilding his criminal organization – but he can’t do it all himself. That’s what makes the idea of him taking on a new apprentice so exciting; it feels like a crucial step for his future.
Devon Izara is a fitting character given the Jedi Order’s vulnerable state – they’re in hiding after being nearly destroyed. A strong desire for revenge against the Empire, fueled by anger, fear, and hatred, could easily lead Izara down a dangerous path, one that Maul could exploit to turn them to the dark side.
Interestingly, original plans for the expanded Star Wars universe (Legends) featured Darth Maul taking on a Twi’lek apprentice named Darth Talon, envisioned as a successor similar to Darth Vader. Although this storyline wasn’t used in the recent sequel trilogy, the comic series Maul – Shadow Lord now offers a way to bring that idea into official Star Wars canon.
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, all signs point to young Jedi Devon Izara becoming Darth Talon. This would create a powerful new Sith pairing alongside Darth Maul, mirroring the dynamic between Sidious and Vader, and promising a spectacular confrontation in the Disney+ series.
