Jessie Buckley’s former co-stars from ‘I’d Do Anything’ have expressed how proud they are of her after she won the Best Actress Oscar – a first for her.
Thirty-six-year-old Irish actress Saoirse Ronan won the Best Actress Oscar on Sunday for her moving portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in the film Hamnet. This historic win makes her the first Irish actress to ever receive the award.
Even though Buckley is now successful in Hollywood, she actually began her career performing in musical theatre.
In 2008, she was the runner-up on the BBC show I’d Do Anything. The show, created by theater producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, featured twelve contestants competing for the chance to play Nancy in a new production of the musical Oliver!
I was so thrilled to see my friend and former colleague, Jodie Buckley, make history with her recent win! It’s been amazing to see all her old co-stars from the BBC show rally around her and share their support – it really shows how much she’s loved and respected by everyone who’s worked with her.
Rachel Tucker, a Northern Irish performer known for her role as Elphaba in the West End production of Wicked and as a finalist on the TV show I’d Do Anything, shared her congratulations to Buckley on Monday via social media.
Tucker shared a video on her Instagram Story from Irish broadcaster RTE. The video showed a crowded pub in her home county of Kerry, filled with people celebrating Buckley’s win.
I’ve been a huge fan of both Rylan and Katie Hall, and it was lovely to see Katie publicly support him. She actually auditioned for ‘I’d Do Anything’ back in the day, making it to boot camp, but unfortunately didn’t get through to the live shows. Now, she’s absolutely brilliant as Sally Bowles in ‘Cabaret’ on the West End – a role Rylan actually created in this current version back in 2021, which makes her support even more meaningful to me!
Katie shared a photo of Buckley with her Oscar on Instagram, writing, ‘She absolutely deserved to win – it was never in doubt!’
‘Huge congratulations to our incredible original Sally @kitkatclubldn.’
To honor her Irish heritage, Buckley concluded her Oscars acceptance speech with the Gaelic phrase ‘Go raibh maith agaibh, slán,’ meaning ‘Thank you very much, goodbye.’
Buckley won against Rose Byrne (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), and Emma Stone (Bugonia).
Inspired by the novel of the same name, Hamnet tells the story of Agnes and William Shakespeare (played by Buckley and Paul Mescal) as they cope with the tragic death of their son, Hamnet, during a plague outbreak in 16th-century England. Agnes, a skilled healer, must find the inner strength to support her remaining children while also dealing with her immense grief.
Everyone is likely to be talking about Jordan winning Best Actor for his performance in Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners. It was the highlight of the evening.
I was absolutely thrilled when Timothée Chalamet won! Everyone was predicting a win for someone else all season, but he completely surprised us with his incredible performance in Marty Supreme. It was such a strong year for actors, with legends like Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent all nominated, but Chalamet really stood out.
Jordan couldn’t believe it when he walked onto the stage and was met by Adrien Brody, the previous year’s winner.
The story follows two brothers who come home hoping for a fresh start, but they quickly find their hometown is plagued by a terrifying new threat: vampires.
Jordan played both of the Moore brothers in the film: the older, more serious Elijah, nicknamed ‘Smoke,’ and the younger, more lighthearted Elias, known as ‘Stack’.
Oh my gosh, you guys, One Battle After Another just swept the awards! I was practically screaming when Paul Thomas Anderson won Best Director – he SO deserved it! And then, Best Adapted Screenplay too?! I knew his vision would be recognized! It was the best night ever for PTA and for the film, honestly. I’m still buzzing!
Meanwhile, Sean Penn was not in attendance as he earned his third Oscar.
The celebrated actor, age 65, won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in “One Battle After Another.” Kieran Culkin announced his name as the winner, but the actor wasn’t present to accept the award.
Ryan Coogler won his first Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay with his film, Sinners.
A particularly heartwarming moment of the evening was Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s win for Best Cinematography for her work on Sinners.
