Here’s a first look at the cancelled Buffy revival series

Honestly, I was already so bummed about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot being cancelled, and now it just feels even worse! The actress who was going to be the new Buffy just shared a picture of her in costume – a look at a show we’re sadly never going to see. It’s a tough pill to swallow.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was cast as the lead in the canceled show Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, posted a picture on Instagram of herself in her Slayer costume from the pilot episode. She captioned the photo with a simple message: “your slayer.”

The planned revival of the show, which was set to stream on Hulu with both returning star Sarah Michelle Gellar and a new cast, had already filmed a pilot episode before the project was canceled over the weekend. Gellar announced the news in a heartfelt video on Instagram, where she expressed her gratitude to director Chloé Zhao for reminding her how much the character resonates with her and with fans.

Okay, so Chloé Zhao – you know, the director of Nomadland and Hamnet – was actually walking the Oscars red carpet doing interviews when the announcement happened. And honestly, her reaction was… pretty calm. She didn’t overreact at all, which I guess is what you’d expect from someone like her.

In an interview with Variety, Zhao stated she wasn’t shocked that Hulu decided not to move forward with the series. However, she admitted she was still processing the news and hadn’t fully accepted the decision.

I really enjoyed working with Sarah, as well as the entire cast and crew. We see ourselves as protectors of the original series,” Zhao explained to Variety. “Staying true to the show and respecting our fans has always been our main goal. We believe everything happens for a reason, so we’re staying positive and open to whatever the future holds.”

When asked if his vague statement hinted at the project being offered to a different streamer, Zhao just repeated, “Welcome the mystery.”

Zhao wore all black with a face veil, a style she explained was inspired by her movie Hamnet, not the show Buffy.

In a heartfelt video message, Armstrong expressed her pride in the team’s work, emphasizing that ‘Buffy’ remains a significant part of their lives and suggesting the possibility of future developments.

So, I was reading up on what’s happening with Buffy, and apparently, people at Hulu still really like the show. A source told Variety that they haven’t given up on it at all, and they’re open to revisiting it with new shows or movies down the line. Basically, there’s still hope for more Buffy content on the platform!

Those who love early 2000s TV will have to settle for an animated reboot of Firefly for now, but the good news is it includes almost the entire original cast.

I’m so excited! It looks like they’re bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer with ‘New Sunnydale’, and it’ll be streaming on Hulu here in the US. If you’re in the UK, it’s a bit different – it’s part of Disney+. Luckily, all the original seasons are available on both Disney+ and ITVX in the UK, and also on Hulu if you’re like me and in the US!
