Jessie Buckley reveals her daughter’s name for the first time in emotional acceptance speech as she dedicates her Best Actress Oscar to ‘the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart’ and vows to have ‘20,000 more babies’ with her husband

Jessie Buckley revealed her daughter’s name for the first time while accepting the Best Actress award at the Oscars in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Jessie Buckley, the 36-year-old star of ‘Hamnet’, made history as the first Irish woman to receive the award, and she sweetly dedicated it to all mothers, calling motherhood a ‘beautiful chaos’.

Jessie revealed in December that she’d given birth to her first child earlier in the year, becoming pregnant shortly after finishing filming on the movie Hamnet.

The actress had previously chosen to keep her daughter’s name private, but during her acceptance speech, Jessie announced that her child is named Isla.

On stage at the Dolby Theatre, she shared a heartfelt message: getting to know Chloe and Maggie helped her realize the incredible power of a mother’s love, which she described as the most impactful experience of her life.

Today is Mother’s Day in the UK, and I want to celebrate not just mothers, but the wonderful, messy, and beautiful emotions that come with being a mom.

I come from a long line of strong women who have always overcome challenges to achieve their goals. I’m incredibly grateful and honored to be recognized in this way – it truly means the world to me.

Jessie gave a heartfelt shout-out to her family – her husband, Freddie Sorensen, and their eight-month-old daughter, Isla.

She expressed her gratitude that her entire family, who are from Ireland, could join her tonight, thanks to flights provided by Ireland. She then thanked her parents for instilling in her the importance of pursuing her own dreams and not letting others dictate her path.

Fred, I love you so much. You’re an amazing dad and my best friend – I can’t imagine my life without you! I feel so lucky to be with you and want to spend the rest of my life making memories with you.

Little Isla is only eight months old and blissfully unaware of everything, likely dreaming of milk right now. But this moment is huge for me, and I love her so much. I love being her mum and I’m excited to share life’s adventures with her.

As a big awards season fan, I always appreciate when nominees acknowledge each other’s talent. It was lovely to see Jessie highlight the incredible work of her fellow actresses: Emma Stone for ‘Bugonia,’ Rose Byrne in ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,’ Renate Reinsve with ‘Sentimental Value,’ and the always brilliant Kate Hudson in ‘Song Sung Blue.’ It’s a classy move that really speaks to the spirit of collaboration in our industry.

She expressed her gratitude to the amazing women she works with, sharing that she’s inspired by their talent and kindness, and eager to collaborate with each of them.

Anora star Mikey Madison, last year’s winner in the same category, presented the award to Jessie.

Jessie had already won several awards leading up to the Oscars and was expected to win the Academy Award as well.

Jessie portrayed Agnes, Shakespeare’s wife and the mother of Hamnet, in the film directed by Chloe Zhao.

The movie received nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, as well as awards for casting, production design, and costume design.

She’s already been recognized with awards from several major ceremonies – including the Actors Awards (formerly known as the SAG Awards), the BAFTAs, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the Golden Globes – for her powerful and moving performance in the film.

She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2022 for her role in The Lost Daughter.

Last year, Chloe opened up about casting Jessie and lauded her performance as Agnes.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker told IndieWire in November 2025 that they were familiar with the actress’s work and sensed she wouldn’t be intimidated. They also noted she lacked vanity, a quality she shared with Fran McDormand.

Chloe explained that, as a neurodivergent person, she struggles when things feel inconsistent or fake. It becomes difficult for her to even make eye contact. That’s why genuine honesty is so important to her – she sees vanity as the biggest obstacle to being real and authentic.

The most valuable gift actors can offer the world is simply being genuine and relatable as people.

The film One Battle After Another concluded the 2026 awards season with a win for Best Picture. Michael B. Jordan and Jessie were recognized as the best actors of the year that night.

At age 39, Michael surprised everyone at the 98th Academy Awards by winning Best Actor for his role in ‘Sinners,’ defeating favorite Timothée Chalamet.

Paul Thomas Anderson, along with Teyana Taylor and the entire team behind the film, received the night’s biggest award. The movie was also the biggest winner overall, taking home six awards.

The American black comedy action-thriller film won against strong competition from several other movies, including Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners, and Train Dreams.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie ‘One Battle After Another’ follows a team of former revolutionaries who come together again when one of their own needs help rescuing his daughter. Their mission is complicated by the return of an old enemy after sixteen years.

Everyone is likely to be talking about Michael winning Best Actor for his performance in Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners. It was the highlight of the night.

Thirty-year-old Timothée, known for his role in Marty Supreme, surprised everyone by winning over established favorites during awards season. He beat out strong competition including Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent).

Jordan couldn’t believe it as he walked onto the stage and was welcomed by Adrien Brody, the previous year’s winner.

The story of Sinners follows two brothers who go back to their hometown hoping for a fresh start, but they find themselves facing a terrifying new threat: vampires.

In the film, Michael played both of the Moore brothers: the older, more serious Elijah, nicknamed ‘Smoke,’ and his younger, more upbeat brother, Elias, known as ‘Stack’.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, dominated the awards ceremony, winning both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
