9 Classic Digivolutions No One Remembers Anymore

The original Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 featured many different evolved forms of the Digimon, but most have been forgotten over time. Today, only WarGreymon, Metal Garurumon, and Omnimon remain popular. Bandai, the company behind Digimon, consistently focuses on the evolutions of Agumon and Gabumon in new series, games, and products, overshadowing the rest of the Digimon.

Digimon Adventure 02 introduced completely new ways for Digimon to evolve, including Armor Digivolution and DNA Digivolution. However, these methods weren’t used in later series like Digimon Tamers, and the franchise ultimately decided not to bring them back. This means these unique digivolutions are now largely remembered as interesting, but ultimately forgotten, parts of Digimon’s past.

Shakkoumon’s Baffling Design Erased This DNA Digivolution From Memory

Shakkoumon is arguably the most overlooked Digivolution in Digimon Adventure 02. The show dedicated five episodes to building up to the fusion of TK’s Angemon and Cody’s Ankylomon, but Shakkoumon’s unique design, inspired by ancient Japanese Shakouki-dogu figurines, confused many Western viewers unfamiliar with the cultural reference. Unlike Paildramon and Silphymon, which clearly resembled their parent Digimon, Shakkoumon’s appearance was a significant departure.

Shakkoumon’s underwhelming first appearance in Digimon Adventure 02 unfortunately stopped any excitement that was building for the pairing that evolved into it. Since then, Bandai hasn’t often included Shakkoumon in new Digimon games or products, making it the most forgotten fusion in the series. Even passionate Digimon fans often point to Shakkoumon as a Digimon they didn’t particularly like when they were younger.

Dinobeemon Never Escaped Paildramon’s Shadow Despite Being Canon

Dinobeemon is what would have happened if Stingmon and Davis’ ExVeemon had Digivolved differently – specifically, if Stingmon had taken the lead in the process instead of ExVeemon. However, the creators of Digimon Adventure 02 officially chose Paildramon as the result of their Digivolution, so Dinobeemon never appeared in the anime. Dinobeemon’s design, a creepy mix of insect and dragon, represented a completely different path for Stingmon and ExVeemon that the show ultimately didn’t follow.

Dinobeemon didn’t appear in the Digimon Adventure 02 anime, so its unique Digivolution method was only shown in extra content like Bandai media and video games. While Paildramon’s line to Imperialdramon is always the focus when people talk about Ken and Davis’s Digimon, Dinobeemon is often forgotten, even by dedicated Digimon fans.

Shurimon Became the Digimon Design Toei Animation Never Used Again

In Digimon Adventure 02, Shurimon transformed Yolei’s Hawkmon into a ninja Digimon using the Digi-Egg of Sincerity, resulting in a strikingly different Armor Digivolution. Bandai categorized Shurimon as a Plant-type Digimon with shuriken-like limbs—a design that completely moved away from Hawkmon’s original bird-like appearance. This drastic change made the evolved form feel separate from Hawkmon, even when the show first aired.

After Digimon Adventure 02, the Digimon series stopped using Armor Digivolutions, and Shurimon was particularly affected. Bandai rarely includes Shurimon in new Digimon games or products. As a result, Shurimon has become the least remembered Armor Digivolution among fans, a victim of changes to the series and its unique design.

SkullGreymon’s Dark Lore Disappeared Behind WarGreymon & Omnimon’s Dominance

SkullGreymon first appeared in episode 16 of Digimon Adventure 02 as a frightening, corrupted form of Agumon. It was created when Tai pushed Greymon too far, forcing an evolution beyond its natural limits. Unlike the powerful evolutions of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, SkullGreymon’s backstory is much more unsettling – it’s an undead Digimon whose body decayed, but it stubbornly clung to existence. Toei Animation introduced SkullGreymon as a way to show the serious consequences of a DigiDestined making a bad decision – a first for the Digimon Adventure series.

Even so, WarGreymon and Omnimon are consistently featured as the primary evolutions of Agumon in all Bandai merchandise, Digimon reboots, and crossover events. SkullGreymon, appearing in only one episode of Digimon Adventure, was used briefly as a plot point and never developed into a major villain, despite being the first exploration of a failed digivolution. Bandai and Toei Animation continue to treat SkullGreymon as a minor detail in projects such as Digimon Adventure tri and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.

Silphymon Lacked the Prestige & Absurdity to Stay Memorable in Digimon Adventure 02

Silphymon was stuck in a difficult spot within Digimon Adventure 02. It wasn’t as crucial to the story as Paildramon, nor did it have the memorably strange design of Shakkoumon. Created from the fusion of Kari’s Gatomon and Yolei’s Aquilamon, Silphymon never had a chance to truly shine in battle or develop a strong identity. While Paildramon got a powerful evolution into Imperialdramon and Shakkoumon became infamous for its unusual appearance, Silphymon simply faded into the background without anything particularly noteworthy happening to it.

In Digimon Adventure 02, Silphymon didn’t have the ability to digivolve further, limiting its potential. Since then, Bandai and Toei have mostly left Silphymon out of newer Digimon games, movies, and products. The focus on the Imperialdramon line means that even dedicated fans often forget that Silphymon is a Digivolution achieved through DNA, making it less prominent in the franchise.

Digimon Adventure 02’s Submarimon Was Discarded Almost Immediately

Submarimon was a special form Cody’s Digimon, Armadillomon, could achieve using a Digi-Egg. It transformed Armadillomon into a submarine-like Digimon inspired by narwhals, and its main purpose was underwater travel. In the Digimon Adventure 02 anime, Toei Animation didn’t portray Submarimon as a strong fighter; it mostly served as a way for the characters to get around underwater. Once the Digimon could normally evolve again, Ankylomon quickly became Armadillomon’s go-to battle form, and Submarimon wasn’t used much after that.

Submarimon’s limited role in Digimon Adventure 02 meant its unique Armor Digivolution didn’t become well-known within the Digimon franchise. Bandai didn’t include it much in later games or merchandise. It’s mostly remembered by fans who rewatch Digimon Adventure 02, and even then, it’s often overlooked as the most forgettable of the Armor Digivolutions.

Magnamon’s Golden Digivolution Was Only Used Once

In the official story of Bandai’s Digimon, Magnamon is a powerful Royal Knight. This meant Davis’s Veemon’s golden Armor Digivolution should have been a major highlight. However, Toei Animation only gave Magnamon one fight in Digimon Adventure 02 – against Kimeramon, using the Digi-Egg of Miracles. Because of this limited role, Magnamon is considered the most underutilized Royal Knight in the entire Digimon franchise.

When fans discuss Davis’s Digimon partner, the evolution line from ExVeemon to Paildramon and finally Imperialdramon always dominates the conversation, completely eclipsing Magnamon. While Magnamon’s status as a Royal Knight should have been a significant element in Digimon’s overall story, Toei Animation never brought this form back in any later anime or movies, which is a shame considering how powerful it was as an Armor Evolution.

The Digimon Franchise Abandoned Garudamon’s Mythological Form

Garudamon, a powerful, fire-based warrior inspired by the mythical Garuda, was a visually striking evolution of Birdramon in Digimon Adventure 02. However, like the Ultimate forms of other secondary DigiDestined partners – such as Lillymon, MegaKabuterimon, and Zudomon – it was overshadowed by the more powerful Mega forms of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon.

Bandai and Toei repeatedly focus on the evolution paths of Agumon and Gabumon in each new Digimon series, consistently sidelining Garudamon. Given Garudamon’s rich mythological background and powerful design as a key Bird-type Digimon, it deserves a more prominent place in the franchise. However, fans tend to concentrate on the strongest, final forms (Mega level), causing important Ultimate-level Digimon like Sora’s partner and others to be largely forgotten.

MagnaAngemon Disappeared After Defeating Piedmon Single-Handedly

In Digimon Adventure 02, MagnaAngemon had the most impactful moment when he used the Gate of Destiny to defeat Piedmon, one of the strongest villains. As Patamon’s powerful, eight-winged form, MagnaAngemon is a holy angel Digimon who fought with the legendary sword Excalibur. This victory dramatically shifted the final arc of the series in favor of the DigiDestined, and no other Digimon at that level had such a significant effect in a single battle.

MagnaAngemon didn’t appear much in Digimon Adventure 02, which was a problem. Although incredibly powerful, its limited appearances meant it didn’t become widely known. Toei and Bandai focused on Angemon for emotional impact and Seraphimon as the strongest form, leaving MagnaAngemon stuck in between and largely forgotten.
