At the 2026 Oscars on Sunday, many Hollywood actors used their red carpet appearances to publicly criticize U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The 98th Academy Awards began with many celebrities using their red carpet arrivals at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to express their political views.
Security has been significantly increased for the ceremony due to worries about a possible response from Iran targeting the US.
When celebrities began arriving at the event, activist Glennon Doyle made a statement with her black clutch, which featured the message ‘f ICE’.
Standing next to her was her wife, Abby Wambach, a retired soccer star. Both women wore a pin displaying the words ‘ICE OUT’.
Singer Sara Bareilles and costume designer Malgosia Turzanska were also seen wearing the brooch.
Several attendees wore pins supporting Artists4Ceasefire, a group advocating for an immediate end to the conflict in Gaza.
Charithra Chandran, a British actress, discussed her choice to wear the pin in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
She stated that they are calling for a stop to the fighting in Gaza, and feels grateful to have a voice she can use to advocate for it.
News moves quickly, but the people living in Gaza and the West Bank continue to face hardship.
During her interview, Chandran was wearing a pin, but it wasn’t visible in her official portraits.
As a lifestyle observer, I’ve noticed a powerful statement being made on and off screen. Saja Kilani, the incredibly talented actress in ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ – a film dealing with the tragic story of a young Palestinian girl – has been seen wearing a red pin, a symbol of solidarity, alongside her co-star, Amer Hlehel. It’s a subtle but meaningful way they’re showing their support and raising awareness.
Speaking to Deadline, she stated that there isn’t currently a ceasefire, and bombings are still occurring. She highlighted the widespread destruction and displacement happening globally.
‘Palestine, Lebanon, Iran and Venezuela, everywhere. This is a demand for a permanent ceasefire.’
Clara Khoury, a fellow actress in the production, explained that the issues depicted in the show are connected to real-life events happening in the United States, specifically involving ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
‘We are all the same, we are all human and hatred is a cancer.
We need to practice empathy and understanding, and governments must recognize each other’s humanity while taking responsibility for past wrongs, no matter where they occurred.
Conan O’Brien began his show by jokingly acknowledging the increased security measures, contrasting them with the ongoing conflicts happening worldwide.
Earlier this year at the Golden Globes, celebrities like Mark Ruffalo wore similar pins to remember Renee Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
Oh my gosh, you guys, “Sinners” is totally going to dominate the awards! Sixteen nominations – can you even believe it?! It’s going to be epic. And, okay, I’m a little obsessed, but “One Battle After Another” is amazing too, and Leo is finally getting the Best Actor attention he deserves! I’m so excited!
Nicole Kidman, Pedro Pascal, Rose Byrne, Delroy Lindo, and Jimmy Kimmel are among the stars who will be presenting awards at the ceremony.
Security has been significantly increased for the ceremony due to worries about a possible response from Iran targeting the US.
Although authorities haven’t received any specific information about an immediate danger, they are still taking steps to be careful.
The LAPD confirmed that around 1,000 private security officers will be on duty for the show.
