As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve always believed a show doesn’t need to drag on for years to be amazing. Some of the best stories are perfectly contained in a single season. And sci-fi? It’s always been a favorite, but lately it’s really hit a stride. With better special effects, more creative stories, and all the cool tech we have now, sci-fi is becoming genuinely groundbreaking.
Recent sci-fi shows like Doctor Who, Lost, Silo, Dark, The Expanse, and Battlestar Galactica have been incredibly popular, but there are also many fantastic sci-fi shows that only lasted one season. These shows stand out just as much, even alongside those bigger hits. Some were cancelled prematurely, others are still being made, and a few were designed as short, complete stories. Regardless, they all offer memorable and well-loved journeys into the world of science fiction.
FlashForward Is Great Despite Not Living Up to Its Full Potential
Created by Brannon Braga (known for The Orville) and David S. Goyer (Foundation), FlashForward centers on an FBI team investigating a mysterious worldwide blackout. During this event, everyone experiences visions of their future. The show features strong performances from a talented cast including Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance, Christine Woods, and Sonya Walger, making it a truly compelling series.
Despite lasting only 22 episodes, FlashForward tells a complex and compelling story with a fascinating premise, intricate mysteries, and well-developed characters. Although ABC cancelled the show due to falling ratings, it has since gained a dedicated fan base. The show’s creator has spoken about difficulties with the studio, suggesting it never fully reached its potential.
3 Body Problem Has More Seasons on the Way After Its Critically Acclaimed First
Adapted for Netflix by the creators of Game of Thrones, Metal Lords, and True Blood, 3 Body Problem is based on the Chinese science fiction novel series “Remembrance of Earth’s Past.” Released in March 2024, the show quickly became a huge hit. It follows scientists and business leaders who make contact with an alien civilization, leading to dramatic shifts for humankind. Even if the series only has one season, it’s already being hailed as a brilliant work.
Just two months after it premiered, the series appears to be drawing inspiration from the second and third books in the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy—The Dark Forest and Death’s End. Currently, 3 Body Problem is receiving widespread acclaim as one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made, largely due to its bold attempt to adapt a very intricate story filled with complex science and physics. Its unique, non-chronological narrative and strong acting contribute to a truly unforgettable viewing experience.
Fans Have Been Calling for a Firefly Revival For Over 20 Years
Despite not being a hit when it first aired in 2002, Firefly is now well-known as a show that was cancelled prematurely. Created by Joss Whedon (The Avengers) and originally shown on Fox, the series was cut short after just 11 of its 14 episodes, leaving fans with an unfinished story and hoping for a continuation. While Whedon’s 2005 film, Serenity, tied up some loose ends, it didn’t achieve the same level of success as the original series.
Firefly is a show about the crew of the spaceship Serenity, who struggle to survive on the edges of civilized space after a war led to the unification of the United States and China into a single government called the Alliance. The show tackles thought-provoking themes about technology, right and wrong, and ethical dilemmas, making it remarkably prescient. Thanks to its captivating story and talented actors, Firefly remains a beloved series, and fans would love to see it continue someday.
Devs Delivers Some of Alex Garland’s Best Work
Exploring complex ideas like free will versus fate is challenging, but Alex Garland seems particularly suited to the task. Following the success of his highly praised films Ex Machina and Annihilation, Garland brought his skills to television with the March 2020 release of Devs. The show shares the realistic science fiction style of his earlier work, featuring stunning visuals, a captivating soundtrack, and outstanding performances from actors he often works with, including Nick Offerman, Sonoya Mizuno, and Karl Glusman.
Devs was designed as a limited series from the start. The story centers on Lily Chan, a software engineer, who investigates the strange happenings at her company—a quantum computing firm led by the mysterious Forest—after her boyfriend unexpectedly dies following his first day working with the secretive Devs team. Because the story is complete and self-contained, further seasons aren’t needed and could even diminish the impact of this excellent, single-season show.
Watchmen Is a Superhero Miniseries Masterpiece
Recently, several limited-run superhero shows have really impressed viewers. Series like WandaVision, Moon Knight, Wonder Man, and The Penguin have been both surprising and enjoyable, but Watchmen stands out as particularly unique. Created by Damon Lindelof (known for Lost and The Leftovers), it’s a follow-up to the classic DC Comics miniseries from 1986-1987. Watchmen tackles important themes like social justice, the role of law enforcement, and racial inequality, all within a compelling science fiction setting and focused on realistic characters.
This superhero series is truly impressive, boasting brilliant writing, well-developed characters, surprising twists, and a bold storytelling approach. It pays homage to the classic DC Comics source material while also creating its own unique story with fresh characters and unexplored territory. The show features a fantastic cast, including Regina King, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jean Smart, delivering a grounded yet powerful viewing experience.
