Supermodel Jodie Kidd’s fiancé, Joseph Bates, has shared his personal battle with alcohol, admitting he wasn’t able to successfully stop drinking last year.
The 40-year-old former Royal Marine, who has been with the 47-year-old model since 2021, openly discussed his struggles with alcohol and how it brings out negative feelings like selfishness and self-doubt.
The entrepreneur shared on Instagram that they quit drinking for nine months last year. They explained their issue wasn’t necessarily how much alcohol they consumed, but rather how it impacted their emotions and, crucially, their behavior towards others.
He explained that alcohol always brought out his selfishness, insecurity, and negativity, so he made the decision to quit drinking.
After being sober for nine months, Joseph – who’s been with Jodie, a pub owner, since 2017 – attempted to start drinking again last summer. He thought he had made enough progress during his time off alcohol to be able to drink responsibly.
He wondered if enough time had passed for him to be different. He hoped his more mindful way of thinking would prevent him from falling back into old, negative patterns and feeling regret again.
I was so mistaken. Once I rediscovered the benefits of being present and mindful, a wave of old insecurities washed over me. I felt the familiar sting of low self-esteem and the feeling of being a fraud, just like I did years ago.
He explained that alcohol is medically proven to worsen problems for people who already struggle with negative thoughts or harmful behavior while drinking – essentially, the more someone drinks, the more severe those issues become. He found this particularly disturbing.
After his previous attempt didn’t work out, Joseph shared that he’s been sober since last summer. He and Jodie began dating in 2017, having first connected while fundraising for a military charity.
Honestly, ever since his incredible comeback last summer, I haven’t touched a drop, and I don’t think I ever will! It really made me realize just how much I couldn’t stand the stuff anyway – it was like a revelation, seeing him shine again and finally understanding my complete aversion to it all.
Real change comes when you genuinely desire it. So, how is life now that I’ve stopped relying on quick fixes and impulsive choices? It’s absolutely amazing.
The CEO of Halen, an online therapy company, shared how becoming sober completely changed his life. He said he’s happier and more fulfilled than ever before, in all areas – from his career and family to his overall well-being.
He explained that it’s not just about thinking clearly, but also about becoming more aware – noticing the beautiful things around you that you might have missed when your mind was racing and chaotic.
This is for anyone who’s struggled to stop drinking, or even just wished they could. If you know alcohol isn’t helping you become the person you want to be, believe in yourself and have faith that things can get better.
Joseph proposed to Jodie while they were on a romantic getaway to Paris in 2021, but they haven’t gotten married yet.

She recalled thinking he was going to simply talk to her, but instead, he unexpectedly revealed something. She admitted she was quite surprised.
In 2024, Jodie admitted they’d put their wedding plans on hold due to their busy work schedules.
She admitted things were moving very slowly with her wedding plans. It’s not that she doesn’t want to get married, but she’s just too busy right now to start planning. She’s hoping to be able to focus on it next year.
The year prior, she’d mentioned the location and wedding dress were all set, they just needed to finalize the date.
The model was married twice before: first to internet entrepreneur Aidan Butler for a year and a half, ending in 2007, and then briefly to author David Blakeley in 2015 for only four months.
Jodie took ownership of The Half Moon pub in Kirdford, West Sussex, in 2017. She shares a 14-year-old son, Indio, with her former partner, Argentinian polo player Andrea Vianini.
Jodie has often spoken fondly of her past relationship with Joseph, appreciating how he brought a sense of peace and stability to what she described as her chaotic life.
She previously described him as grounded and humble, thanks to his military experience. She added that he brings a sense of peace to her often chaotic life.
Jodie and Joseph first connected when she was fundraising for a military charity. Later, she invited Joseph to join her in Dominica to assist with recovery efforts after Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Joseph, a veteran of the UK Special Forces and the Special Boat Service in Afghanistan, joined the Royal Marines after his father died from Pick’s disease, a type of Alzheimer’s, when he was just 17 years old.
Following his military service, he helped create Halen, an app offering therapy and mental health resources. He was inspired to do this by his own struggles with mental health after experiencing combat.
