Harry Styles made a pointed joke about Prince Andrew during his opening remarks on Saturday Night Live, following the former royal’s arrest last month.
The 32-year-old singer is back hosting the NBC show, following the huge success of his latest album, which reached number one.
In his speech, Harry joked about being out of the public eye for a long time, saying he’d become ‘incredibly dull’. He then added that his period of privacy was a relief compared to the very public struggles Andrew had faced.
Andrew has come under heavy scrutiny for his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, was arrested last month and is being investigated for potentially misusing his position while working as a trade envoy. The allegations involve claims that he shared confidential information with Jeffrey Epstein.
He has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to his friendship with Epstein.
Harry started jogging recently. He admits it’s not a particularly exciting activity, but people seem fascinated simply because it’s him doing it. He’s not trying to impress anyone, though – he runs because he genuinely enjoys the feeling, that incredible ‘runner’s high’.
I enjoy simple pleasures – things like the feeling you get from a good workout or even just the sweetness of watermelon. And, to be honest, I’ve also experimented with things like ecstasy. Having lived much of my life in the spotlight, I’ve come to appreciate the value of being normal. It’s a much better situation to be in than the difficult alternative.
Just then, a picture flashed on the screen showing Andrew in the back of a police car after being arrested.
On his 66th birthday, Prince Andrew was arrested by police at his home, Wood Farm on the Sandringham Estate. This followed his eviction from the Royal Lodge due to his connection with Epstein, and was part of an investigation into claims of wrongdoing while he held public office.
He spent around 10 hours at Aylsham Police Station before being released shortly before 7pm.
The UK government might pass a law to remove Prince Andrew from the line to become king, following the scandal that led to him losing his royal titles.
During his speech, Andrew criticized fans who had accused him of ‘queerbaiting’ for trying to be politically correct.
Queerbaiting is a marketing tactic where creators suggest a romantic connection between characters of the same sex, but deliberately avoid confirming it. This is done to attract LGBTQ+ viewers without alienating audiences who might be prejudiced against same-sex relationships.
The singer directly addressed the claims while hosting the show this weekend, and reminisced about his previous hosting experience in 2019.
He recalled that people used to focus a lot on his outfits and even accused him of ‘queerbaiting.’ Then, with a dramatic flourish, he asked his dad, ‘Did it ever cross your mind that you might not know everything about me?’
He concluded his speech by kissing Marshall, then looked directly at the camera and playfully declared, ‘That’s what we call queerbaiting!’
The kiss happened after a playful conversation about Louis Tomlinson’s new album, ‘Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally.’
He explained his enthusiasm for the title, joking that ‘what could be better than kissing constantly?’ This comment immediately brought Saturday Night Live’s Chloe Fineman excitedly onto the stage.
Styles clarified that he wasn’t interested in kissing constantly. He seemed to ignore Fineman, who looked disappointed and walked away.
Harry Styles mentioned that kissing can be wonderful, and as his co-star Sarah Sherman came onstage, he quickly added that it’s only great if both people are skilled and kind, which made Sherman visibly embarrassed and she stepped away.
I was absolutely losing it when Styles said, ‘Or if you have a tight little bum!’ Seriously, the crowd went wild! Then, out of nowhere, Ben Marshall just walked onstage, and Styles, being the playful guy he is, immediately asked him, ‘What are you doing here?’ It was such a spontaneous and funny moment, I couldn’t stop smiling.
Marshall playfully said, ‘You complimented my rear end, so where’s the reward?’ Styles responded with a laugh, ‘Don’t even pretend, Ben – there’s nothing small about it. You’ve got a lot to carry around back there!’
Marshall stated a fact, and Styles playfully responded, ‘Whatever,’ before pulling him close for a kiss that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
