If you enjoy superhero shows but are starting to feel burned out by them, you should definitely check out Extraordinary. This British series debuted on Hulu in 2023 and, even though critics loved it (it has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it was unfortunately canceled after just two seasons. Despite that, it’s still a fantastic show worth watching.
Many superhero TV shows these days are either overly dark or violent, making it hard for fans to find something more lighthearted. Although shows like The Penguin have been praised and The Boys season 5 looks promising, they aren’t what people are looking for if they want a fun, comic book-inspired experience. That’s why Extraordinary is a welcome change.
What Is Extraordinary About?
Most superhero stories focus on a single person suddenly getting powers in an otherwise normal world. But the show Extraordinary flips that idea on its head. It’s set in a world where everyone develops a superpower when they turn 18—everyone, that is, except for Jen (Máiréad Tyers).
I’m really drawn to this character, Jen. She’s 25 and works at a costume shop in London, but she’s been waiting years – seven, to be exact – for her superhero powers to finally show up. It’s been a tough wait, and honestly, it’s made her pretty insecure and a little resentful. It’s especially hard for her when her younger half-sister, Andy, suddenly develops superstrength right at her 18th birthday party – talk about a rough day!
Many superpowers aren’t glamorous. Often, they’re strange, incredibly specific, and more trouble than they’re worth. For example, one character randomly becomes magnetic without any control, and another squirts ink when frightened. Even powers that sound amazing can be problematic – like Gordon, who causes instant arousal with a single touch. While it might seem cool, it actually leaves him feeling lonely, as he can’t experience normal physical affection.
Jen is frustrated by not having any superpowers, believing they would solve her problems and help her figure out who she is. Extraordinary is a unique and charming series that blends the typical coming-of-age story with a fresh take on the superhero genre.
Why Extraordinary Is The Best (& Most Underrated) Modern Superhero Show
It’s unfortunate that Extraordinary didn’t get more promotion while it was airing. It debuted in 2023, just as audiences were starting to get tired of superhero stories. The Marvel Cinematic Universe was past its peak, with movies released after Endgame performing less well, and its TV series feeling more like required viewing than enjoyable entertainment.
The marketing for the show Extraordinary is easy because the show itself is so unique. Unlike many superhero stories that focus on huge, world-ending plots, Extraordinary prioritizes its characters, which is a great strength. While the main character, Jen, is searching for superpowers, the show is truly about her journey of self-discovery and learning to accept herself – it’s a personal story, not one about saving the world.
If you’re expecting a superhero show filled with huge explosions and special effects, this might not be for you. But that’s actually what makes the series so good – it’s incredibly relatable. Most people can connect with Jen’s experiences at some point in their lives.
Be aware that the show Extraordinary ends abruptly with a cliffhanger because it was cancelled early. However, if you’re okay with that, it’s a really good watch. The main character, Jen, might not seem like a typical strong hero, but her story is compelling because Extraordinary isn’t afraid to be different from other superhero shows.
