I Just Found Out One Of Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another Stunts Was Changed Last-Minute So It’d Be Less Painful

Since its release last September, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, has been a major talking point – and rightfully so. Critics love it, and it’s already been named one of TopMob’s best movies of 2025, earning an impressive 13 Oscar nominations. The film is especially praised for its exciting action, including a particularly thrilling car chase. Interestingly, TopMob recently discovered how a stunt involving Leonardo DiCaprio’s character, Bob, jumping from a moving car was altered on set to ensure his comfort and safety.

Bob has to quickly and dangerously leave the car when he and Sergio, played by Benicio del Toro, drive past a police car while Bob is drinking beer. With the police now pursuing them for drunk driving, and Bob urgently trying to save his daughter from Colonel Lockjaw (Sean Penn), Sergio, who was driving, told Bob to jump out to avoid being stopped. Leonardo DiCaprio performed the stunt, falling into a roadside ditch, though the location wasn’t always planned. According to Brian Mochleit, the stunt coordinator for the film,

That scene presented some difficulties. We ended up shooting it from the front and the back several times – around two or three takes of each. What was really helpful was finding the right location. The original plan had the character landing on concrete, but I suggested moving it a couple of houses down. We found a small dirt area where he could realistically hide from the police. This location not only improved the story, but also allowed the actor to perform the scene more safely and with his own interpretation, as it was much better than having him land on hard concrete.

Initially, I thought a stunt double performed the car jump, so I was impressed to learn Leonardo DiCaprio did it himself. However, if they had filmed at the actual location where the incident happened – a concrete surface – the stunt coordinator would have definitely used a professional. Jumping from a car into a ditch is already risky, but landing on concrete is far more dangerous, and we wouldn’t want DiCaprio to get hurt.

Luckily, Mochleit noticed that patch of dirt just a short distance away right before we filmed the car jump. When I mentioned how fortunate that was while we were shooting One Battle After Another, he said:

You know, it turned out the perfect location was practically around the corner from where we’d initially planned! And the film really thrived on that kind of spontaneous, natural vibe. We did a lot of location scouting beforehand, but honestly, the best stuff happened while we were filming – things just kept falling into place and improving as we went.
