Why ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Will Be More Expensive

According to showrunner Ira Parker, rising costs due to inflation will likely affect the production of Season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The HBO series, a Game of Thrones spin-off currently airing weekly, follows the adventures of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall and his squire, Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, as Dunk enters his first jousting tournament. Throughout the season, he meets various knights, including Ser Lyonel Baratheon, Ser Steffon Fossoway, Ser Manfred Dondarrion, and Ser Humfrey Beesbury. While the first season cost approximately $60 million to film 18 months ago in Belfast, Northern Ireland, production expenses have significantly increased since then.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Parker revealed some details about the upcoming episodes, which will be based on George R.R. Martin’s story The Sworn Sword. He mentioned that filming could take place in locations previously used for Game of Thrones – including Croatia, Malta, Morocco, and Spain – to capture the necessary footage.

The second season will still have six episodes and a similar scale to the first, possibly even a bit more focused. While the overall budget hasn’t changed, rising costs due to inflation are making things tighter. Also, because the story takes place during a drought, we can’t film outside in Belfast like we did before. We need to find a dry, sunny location, which is a significant added expense. Despite these challenges, I’m really enjoying working on Season 2, and I believe it will be an improvement over the first.

Released in 2003, The Sworn Sword takes place in the Reach, where Dunk and Egg are serving Ser Eustace Osgrey. The story is set during a dry summer following a widespread illness, and a dispute arises when Lady Rohanne Webber, known as the Red Widow of Coldmoat, decides to build a dam. This leads to Dunk being challenged to a duel with Ser Lucas Inchfield to settle the conflict. Throughout it all, the playful relationship between Dunk and Egg provides some much-needed levity.

‘AKOTSK’ Provides Welcome Hound and Arya Stark Energy

HBO

Fans of Game of Thrones will enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which feels like a continuation of Arya Stark and Sandor “The Hound” Clegane’s journey together. According to creator George R.R. Martin, this new story doesn’t focus on the political struggles of Westeros or the threat of the White Walkers. Instead, it’s filled with the charming interactions between unlikely companions – a dynamic also present in Martin’s novellas The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight, which would likely serve as the basis for a third season of the series.

We’ve got Dunk and Egg, and their relationship is a bit like some of the pairings in Game of Thrones – think the Hound and Arya, or Pod and Brienne. George R.R. Martin is great at writing those unexpected but compelling duos, and they were always my favorite parts of the show. Now we’re getting a whole series built around a similar unlikely pair, and it’s really enjoyable.
