The Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought many famous Marvel characters to life, and some of their costumes have been updated successfully. For instance, Matt Murdock’s Daredevil costume in the Netflix series is a great improvement on the original design from the 1993 comic Daredevil: The Man Without Fear. However, not all characters have received the same treatment – one of Daredevil’s most notable enemies, Bullseye, hasn’t had a similarly well-received costume update.
Bullseye has appeared in two live-action versions so far: Colin Farrell played him in the Daredevil movie, and Wilson Bethel has taken on the role in both the Netflix Daredevil series and the new Disney+ Daredevil: Born Again show. While both actors have given compelling performances as the villain, neither version has featured a truly great costume, and fans hope the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally deliver one.
“I Want a Bloody Costume.”
I always felt bad for Bullseye, honestly. He pointed out he didn’t have a real costume like Daredevil or Elektra, and it’s true – trying to design something cool and unique for him would be a real challenge. It’s just tough to make a Bullseye costume stand out!
Let’s be honest, Bullseye’s costume has never been particularly impressive. It’s basically stayed the same since his first appearance in Daredevil #131 back in 1976: a simple black and white suit with a bullseye symbol on his mask. It hasn’t really been updated or improved much since then.
Daredevil’s look is distinctive, with his horns, muscular build, and striking color scheme. Elektra also has a stylish ninja appearance, and the Punisher’s outfits are always practical and feature his signature white skull. However, it would be challenging to create a believable and intimidating version of Bullseye while staying true to his original character.
The look of Bullseye in the 2003 Daredevil movie, with its biker style, fit the gritty tone of the early 2000s and worked well at the time. However, the more recent MCU version of Bullseye hasn’t been as successful. Instead of updating the character, it’s unfortunately gone in a completely different, and less effective, artistic direction.
Will MCU’s Bullseye Graduate from Balaclavas?
The best live-action Bullseye costume appeared when the character debuted in the Netflix series Daredevil. Benjamin Poindexter, as Bullseye, famously wore a copy of Matt Murdock’s Daredevil costume, pretending to be the hero to make him look like a killer. It’s interesting to note that if Dex had kept the suit, removed the horns, and painted it black, it would have been a great Bullseye costume for the show.
The new season of Daredevil: Born Again hasn’t had much promotion so far. But from what we’ve seen, Bullseye will be back as a dangerous enemy, using surprisingly deadly and inventive weapons. Despite how exciting and brutal his attacks might be, though, many fans feel his costume doesn’t quite match his intimidating presence.
Currently, Bullseye’s costume in Daredevil: Born Again is a plain and unattractive blue suit, with only some brown and orange accents on his weapon holders. Hopefully, he’ll get a new costume by the end of the show’s second season, which would be a welcome improvement.
It’s currently unknown if the curse affecting Bullseye’s costume will ever be lifted. While Colin Farrell’s version of the character never received a costume, there’s still a chance Wilson Bethel’s portrayal could.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is scheduled to be released on Disney+ on March 24.
