Henry Alonso Myers, an executive producer and co-showrunner for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, has revealed that a mystery surrounding Lieutenant Spock (played by Ethan Peck) – one that’s been building since the first season – will finally be solved. The show is currently being edited after finishing filming in late 2025, and this will be its fifth and final season.
Paramount+ has renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for seasons 4 and 5, and filming for both will happen consecutively in 2025. Season 4 is anticipated to launch in 2026, probably during the summer months as with the previous seasons. Season 5 is currently slated for 2027, following the premiere of season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
At the Saturn Awards, TrekMovie’s Anthony Pascale spoke with Henry Alonso Myers about the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. They discussed Sybok, Spock’s brother who appeared in season one, and Myers hinted that Sybok will continue to be a part of the series. Here’s what Myers said:
As a huge fan of the show, I was really excited to hear Henry Alonso Myers talk about Sybok! He basically confirmed that Sybok will definitely be back in future seasons, and that we’ll get to see more of his story unfold. It sounds like they have big plans for the character, which is awesome!
In 2022, a surprising character appeared at the end of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 7, “The Serene Squall.” It was Sybok, a figure only shown from behind and without credited actor. The episode revealed Sybok is being held at the Ankeshtan K’Til Vulcan Criminal Rehabilitation Center, and Spock’s ex-fiancée, T’Pring (played by Gia Sandhu), is the one guarding him.
Lawrence Luckinbill played Sybok, who first appeared in the 1989 film Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Sybok was a Vulcan who, unlike most of his kind, fully embraced his emotions. He took control of the USS Enterprise-A, determined to find what he believed was God (played by George Murdock) on the legendary planet Sha Ka Ree.
Okay, let me tell you, seeing Sybok pop up in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was a total surprise! And even more surprising was his new life – apparently, he’s married to a space pirate, Captain Angel (played brilliantly by Jesse James Keitel), and going by the alias Xaverius. But here’s the thing – after that first season, they just… dropped the character. We haven’t heard a peep about Sybok since, which is a bit of a shame considering the interesting setup.
A hint from Henry Alonso Myers suggests that the character Sybok, previously left as an open question, will be addressed in either season 4 or 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This idea is fueled by a recent photo of Ethan Peck as Spock, sporting a long beard and hair – a look that strongly resembles Sybok. It’s currently unknown what this transformation signifies for the show.
During Comic-Con 2024, ScreenRant’s John Orquiola questioned Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers about the potential appearance of Sybok. Myers didn’t give a direct answer, simply stating, “To be continued…” This suggests Sybok could still be part of the story during the show’s upcoming two seasons and 16 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
