Ice Cube received a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his performance in the film War of the Worlds, which was also named Worst Picture.
As a lifestyle expert, I always say there’s a flip side to everything – even awards season! While everyone anticipates the Oscars, I keep an eye on the Golden Raspberry Awards, or ‘Razzies’ as they’re affectionately known. They playfully highlight the films and performances that didn’t quite hit the mark that year. It’s a fun tradition held on March 14th, just the day before the glitz and glamour of the Academy Awards.
Despite its popularity, War of the Worlds only received five awards, and Ice Cube surprisingly won an award over other nominees like Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye.
The Weeknd starred in his new movie, Hurry Up Tomorrow. The film features a character based on himself and is connected to his album of the same name.
Dave Bautista’s performance in the fantasy film In the Lost Lands, Jared Leto in Tron: Ares, and Scott Eastwood in the action movie Alarum (where he acted with Sylvester Stallone) were all considered among the weakest acting performances of the year.
Despite being a leader among the nominees, Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds also received awards for Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel.
Rich Lee, the director of War of the Worlds, won an award over competitors like Marc Webb, who directed the recent live-action Snow White film with Rachel Zegler.
I was really excited to hear who was in the running for this project! Apparently, the other directors considered were Joe and Anthony Russo, who were hoping to do ‘The Electric State,’ Trey Edward Shults with his idea for ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow,’ and Olatunde Osunsanmi, who had a pitch for a new ‘Star Trek: Section 31’ series. It was a tough competition, for sure!
Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman received the award for worst screenplay for War of the Worlds. Other contenders for the prize included the script for Snow White (by Erin Cressida Wilson and several other writers), as well as the screenplays for The Electric State, Hurry Up Tomorrow, and Star Trek: Section 31.
War of the Worlds was voted the worst among new or follow-up films, surpassing Snow White, The Smurfs, the latest installment of I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
Snow White received two Golden Raspberry Awards – for worst on-screen combination and worst supporting actor. The award for the latter went to ‘all seven artificial dwarfs,’ a collective nod stemming from a long and strange debate surrounding the characters.
Some other famously awkward on-screen pairings included Ice Cube with the shaky camera work in War of the Worlds, James Corden and Rihanna in The Smurfs, Robert De Niro playing two roles in The Alto Knights, and The Weeknd—along with what some considered his overwhelming presence—in Hurry Up Tomorrow.
The award for worst supporting actor went to the group of dwarfs, beating out Nicolas Cage (Gunslingers), Sylvester Stallone (Alarum), Stephen Dorff (Bride Hard), and Greg Kinnear, who appeared in the action film Off the Grid starring Josh Duhamel.
Rebel Wilson was awarded the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress for her film Bride Hard. She beat out other nominees, including Milla Jovovich, known for her role in Resident Evil, who was nominated for In the Lost Lands.
Florence Pugh wasn’t the only strong contender for the award. She was up against Ariana DeBose (from West Side Story, for her role in Love Hurts), Natalie Portman (in the action-comedy Fountain of Youth), and Michelle Yeoh (starring in Star Trek: Section 31), all of whom had previously won Oscars.
While Sylvester Stallone avoided winning the award for worst supporting actor, his daughter, Scarlett Rose, did win the award for her performance in the movie Gunslingers.
She won the award over Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Ema Horvath (The Strangers: Chapter 2), Kacey Rohl (Star Trek: Section 31), and Isis Valverde (Alarum).
Kate Hudson is receiving a special Razzie Award, called the Razzie Redeemer, for her performance in the otherwise poorly-received film Song Sung Blue. Ironically, she’s also up for Best Actress at the Oscars this Sunday.
