Apple TV’s Sugar Starts As A Conventional Detective Drama Before Turning Into Something Bizarre

The Apple TV+ series Sugar starts by presenting Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a detective investigating a missing person. From the beginning, he comes across as a bit unusual, experiencing sudden, intense illnesses that cause him to lose consciousness. He also has a noticeable fondness for classic film noir, but overall, he doesn’t appear drastically different from other detectives.
As the series unfolds, the character becomes increasingly unusual. We learn he can speak many languages and has incredibly fast reflexes. He even goes to a meeting with other people who are fluent in multiple languages.
Throughout the first half of the Apple TV show, viewers get small clues about a big surprise. Then, around the middle of the series, everything changes. What starts as a standard detective story unexpectedly becomes a science fiction thriller about aliens, forcing you to see the main character in a completely new light.
The show holds back a major plot twist until the very end of its first season, leaving the audience with many unanswered questions. Looking back, it’s difficult to say whether the twist was brilliantly clever or simply excessive.
Despite leaving viewers wanting more, the first season of Sugar was successful enough on Apple TV to earn a renewal. Season 2 is set to premiere on June 19, 2026, and after the shocking twist at the end of season 1, it’s hard not to be excited to see what happens next.

Sugar’s Sci-Fi Twist Can Make Or Break It In Season 2
The sci-fi elements in Sugar bring to mind the surprising plot twists found in M. Night Shyamalan films. Similar to how Bruce Willis’s character in The Sixth Sense discovers the truth about his own death and the children in The Visit realize their grandparents aren’t who they seem, Sugar subtly hints at a big reveal – that its main character isn’t what they appear to be.
It all clicks into place when you see him – suddenly it makes perfect sense why he’s so fluent in different languages, how he can avoid danger, and why he drops these amazing lines from old Westerns and detective movies. It’s like everything connects, and you get it.
The first season of Sugar ends by raising a lot of questions about the main character’s past and his family, particularly his sister – and these questions could be explored in future episodes. However, the show changed genres unexpectedly, and the writers will need to manage this shift well in season two.
As a big fan of this Apple TV show, I’ve noticed it can really switch gears – one minute it’s a classic detective story, the next it’s exploring some seriously mind-bending sci-fi ideas. It seems like the second season, just like the first, is going to try and juggle both of those sides of itself. And honestly, that’s what makes it stand out on Apple TV – it’s not like anything else they offer!
Let’s hope that in season 2, Apple TV’s Sugar doesn’t get overly focused on being different or adding more science fiction. The first season was so compelling because of its focus on the characters and the detective story, and it would be great if the show continues to prioritize that.
