Director Max Landis proposed a fresh take on a reboot of the film series, aiming for a surprising new path. Unfortunately, Paramount Pictures has decided not to pursue the project.
News surfaced recently that Paramount was considering ideas from various writers for a new installment in the franchise. Josh Landis, the writer of Chronicle, was one of those who submitted a proposal. Now, according to sources, Paramount has decided not to move forward with Landis’ concept. The filmmaker has confirmed he pitched an idea to the studio and shared details about what he had in mind.
Cobra Would’ve Taken Over the World in the Reboot
Landis expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, explaining the project came about unexpectedly due to the unique and unconventional concept. His reboot centers on Cobra having conquered the world and relegated G.I. Joe to the realm of myth. He noted that large-scale franchise development often involves such shifts and was surprised the details were made public.
Back in February, reports surfaced that both Landis and Danny McBride (known for The Righteous Gemstones) were developing ideas for a new G.I. Joe movie. Landis had already completed a draft, while McBride was still working on his. Now, Variety says McBride’s version isn’t dead – Paramount hasn’t dismissed it, though they haven’t officially approved it yet either.
Will the Transformers Crossover Still Happen?
A crossover movie featuring both G.I. Joe and Transformers is still a possibility. The 2023 film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts included hints of a potential crossover, but no firm plans were made. It’s unclear if a new pitch from McBride would contribute to this crossover if approved. However, getting the go-ahead for a new G.I. Joe movie would be a major move towards finally bringing these two franchises together in a shared film.
As a big action movie fan, I’ve been following the G.I. Joe films for years. It all started back in 2009 with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which did pretty well, bringing in over $300 million worldwide. Then came G.I. Joe: Retaliation in 2013 – that one actually made even more, surpassing $370 million! But things slowed down with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins in 2021; it only earned around $110 million at the box office. I guess that’s why Paramount is being so careful about making another one – they’re waiting for a really solid idea before jumping back in, and honestly, I can’t blame them.
For now, fans can get more of G.I. Joe with the franchise’s .
