Buffy’s Sarah Michelle Gellar “really sad” to confirm reboot has been cancelled

Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared that the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, titled New Sunnydale, has been cancelled. Hulu has decided not to move forward with the project.

Buffy star and executive producer, along with director Chloé Zhao, shared the announcement on Instagram.

Hey guys, I’m really bummed to have to tell you this, but I wanted you to hear it directly from me.

“Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale“, she explained.

I’m so grateful to Chloe Zhao for bringing back such wonderful memories. She reminded me of how much I adore her and how important she is to me and to all of you, and that feeling hasn’t changed.

Viewers were upset and voiced their disappointment online, urging Hulu to reconsider the cancellation or hoping another streaming service, like Netflix, would save the show. Even Kathryn Newton, who starred in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, reacted with a heartbroken emoji.

The upcoming reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will star the original Buffy alongside a new Slayer character named Nova, who will be played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, known for her role in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Chase Sui Wonders, who previously acted with Jennifer Love Hewitt in the recent I Know What You Did Last Summer movie, also landed a smaller part in the new project.

Besides the initial announcements, no other actors from the original series were confirmed to be joining the reboot. Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, shared that she hadn’t been asked to reprise her role, even though her character died in the show Angel.
