Since its debut in 2010, The Walking Dead was a hugely successful show, running for eleven seasons and concluding in 2021. While the main series has ended after over fifteen years, the universe of TWD continues to grow with new stories and spin-offs.
The first spin-off of The Walking Dead, called Fear the Walking Dead, premiered in 2015. Although a few characters appeared in both shows, this new series mostly told a separate story, distinct from the one following Rick Grimes and his survivors.
The series has continued to expand since its beginning, spawning several spin-offs and three sequel shows that followed characters from the original. While The Ones Who Live was designed as a limited series, Daryl Dixon and Dead City were intended to be ongoing shows, though that may not continue to be the case.
The Walking Dead Still Hasn’t Announced Anything For After Daryl Dixon & Dead City’s Next Seasons
It’s notable that even before The Walking Dead finished, plans were in place to keep the story going with several spin-off shows. This is a somewhat uncommon way to end a series, but the studio believed there were still compelling stories within the TWD universe best told through new shows. Initially, they considered continuing the story with movies, but those plans didn’t come to fruition.
The last episode of The Walking Dead served as a preview of what’s next, aiming to keep viewers interested. Since then, three new shows have premiered. The Ones Who Live centers on Rick Grimes and Michonne as they find their way back to each other and battle the powerful Civic Republic Military, which held Rick captive for years.
The new series, Daryl Dixon, follows a main character from the original show as he finds himself stranded in an unfamiliar country, unsure of how he arrived. The show is scheduled to conclude with its fourth and final season in 2026, bringing his storyline to a close.
The series Dead City centers on Maggie and Negan’s journey to Manhattan to rescue Maggie’s son, who has been taken. Season three is coming soon, though a release date hasn’t been announced. While the show hasn’t been officially canceled after three seasons, there are currently no plans for additional seasons beyond that.
A project called More Tales From The Walking Dead was announced in 2023, but there haven’t been any updates since then. This has led many to think the show has been cancelled.
The Walking Dead Still Has A Lot Of Unresolved Storylines To Finish
So far, the world of The Walking Dead includes seven TV shows totaling 28 seasons, with two more on the way. That’s a huge amount of content, but even after all that storytelling, many questions about the TWD universe still haven’t been answered.
As a longtime fan, one thing that’s always bothered me is the mystery surrounding the virus itself. The creator of the original comics has said he intentionally didn’t want to explain its origins, but the show has actually added hints that it might have come from a lab in France. It’s frustrating though, because they’ve dropped these clues without ever really explaining why it was created, what its purpose was, or how it ended up spreading all over the world. We’re left with a lot of questions and not many answers!
We still don’t know much about the virus’s global impact, although Europe and North America have been studied quite a bit. It’s possible that some areas of the world remain unaffected and isolated from the widespread infection.
Rumors of a cure have surfaced repeatedly throughout the series. Both Daryl Dixon and The Ones Who Live storylines heavily feature the search for a cure, whether through the CRM’s research or the possibility that one boy is naturally immune.
Beyond the major, ongoing mysteries, several storylines still need satisfying conclusions. One key example is the unresolved connection between Rick and Daryl. While their distance makes a reunion seem unlikely, it feels crucial for the story to properly address and conclude their friendship.
The story hasn’t explained what happened within the CRM after Rick and Michonne left. While they caused some disruption and the organization might need new leaders, it’s still a powerful group with a wide influence. This means the CRM could continue to be a threat to Rick and his allies down the road.
A Walking Dead Crossover Would Be The Best Way To End The Franchise
Considering everything, the most effective way to finish the stories that have spread across numerous spin-offs would be to reunite them in the original series. The Walking Dead is where these characters truly grew and where their relationships were first established.
Since the main storyline finished, the characters have been pursuing their own paths and individual adventures. However, as the series nears its conclusion, it would be fitting to bring everyone back together for a final, unifying story.
After a long and successful run, The Walking Dead is nearing its conclusion. Many fans believe the show deserves a satisfying ending where the original characters reunite happily – a conclusion that could have happened at the end of season eleven, and might now be possible through a special crossover event.
