NBC’s Medical Show Lands Return Date, One Month After Last Episodes Were Pulled From Schedule

Brilliant Minds will have its chance to shine once more.

Zachary Quinto plays a neurologist who can’t recognize faces in NBC’s medical drama, a character inspired by the real-life doctor Oliver Sacks. The show was picked up for a second season in May 2025, just four months after its first season ended. Unfortunately, production on season 2 was halted with six episodes still unfinished. NBC removed the show from its schedule before the Olympics in February and hasn’t announced when it might return.

Despite a recent dip in viewership, the show Brilliant Minds will be back to finish its second season, according to TheWrap. NBC has announced the remaining five episodes will begin airing on Wednesday, May 27th at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with new episodes released weekly at the same time.

Zachary Quinto’s show is bringing on four guest stars for the final episodes of the season. Among them is Ed Begley Jr., a seven-time Emmy nominee known for his role in St. Elsewhere, who will play Duke, a father trying to reconnect with his son while dealing with memory loss.

The cast also includes Ana Ortiz (from Love, Victor) as Alyssa, a woman newly released from prison hoping to turn her life around, Mamie Gummer (from We Were Liars) as Regan, a difficult patient experiencing severe episodes, and Anne Archer (from Fatal Attraction) as Bonnie, a mother whose illness forces her to reconsider her future.

Whether Brilliant Minds will get a third season is still uncertain. The show is currently considered to be on the verge of cancellation, and it’s facing tough competition from five new drama pilots NBC is considering, including Protection (written by Josh Safran and Jenna Bush Hager), What the Dead Know (produced by Dick Wolf), and a reboot of Rockford Files starring David Boreanaz.

Although the show has brought in several well-known guest stars for the final episodes of its second season, likely to attract more viewers, past performance of Brilliant Minds suggests that having famous guest stars doesn’t always boost ratings.

After Eric Dane, a former star of Grey’s Anatomy, appeared in an episode in 2025 playing a character with ALS – a disease he was publicly battling himself – viewership for season 2 began to fall. Sadly, Dane passed away in February 2026.

We’ll probably find out whether “Brilliant Minds” will be back for season 2 before the new season actually starts. NBC usually makes decisions about renewing or canceling shows around mid-May.
