The TV show Ted, created by Seth MacFarlane, might be finishing up soon, but MacFarlane may have some surprises planned.
The Ted series started with the first movie in 2012, a raunchy comedy about a man named John Bennett (played by Mark Wahlberg) and his unexpectedly lively, and very adult, teddy bear. A sequel, Ted 2, came out in 2015. In 2024, a new series began, taking place in the 1990s and showing a young John growing up with his mischievous, talking teddy bear.
In a recent interview with Collider, Ted creator and director Seth MacFarlane discussed the show’s future. He mentioned that Ted could have potentially lasted for 20 seasons, similar to his hit show Family Guy, which is currently in its 24th season. However, MacFarlane explained that making the show is technically more difficult than even working on a Marvel movie.
I won’t mention any specific streaming shows, but there’s a difference between shows driven by their overall concept and those driven by their characters – this has been true for television for a long time. Shows like Friends and The Office are character-based. Because these shows focus on the people, they can potentially go on forever, as the stories simply follow what happens to those characters in different situations. Viewers tune in to see them, not necessarily for a specific plot.
Honestly, the show’s potential is huge, as far as I’m concerned. ‘Ted Lasso’ is really driven by its characters, and that’s what makes it so great. The biggest challenge we face isn’t creative – it’s the cost. Creating that realistic bear character takes a lot of money! But we’ve got an amazing cast and writing team, so story-wise, we could keep going for a really long time – honestly, I think 20 seasons wouldn’t be a stretch. It’s just that CGI aspect that makes it tricky. But as for how long the show could last? There’s no real limit. As long as people enjoy spending time with these characters each week, we could keep telling stories indefinitely.
Seth MacFarlane recently spoke with ScreenRant about the show’s future, including a possible third season, but unfortunately, there aren’t any current plans for one. The first season was reportedly very expensive, costing around $70 million because of the extensive use of computer-generated imagery in nearly every scene. While MacFarlane believes the show could potentially last for 20 seasons, the high production costs might ultimately be what stops it.
Although the future is uncertain, Seth MacFarlane indicated that a third season isn’t completely off the table, offering some hope to fans.
