Story Highlights
- HoYoverse recovered over $5.38 million in damages and settlements during 2025.
- The company filed civil lawsuits against 2,388 individuals linked to leaks and cheats.
When you see “million” associated with a gacha game, it usually refers to how much money the game has made. However, in this case, the millions earned by HoYoverse didn’t come from game revenue—they came from legal settlements.
HoYoverse announced it received over 37 million yuan (about $5.38 million) in 2025 through legal action against those who leaked information, cheated, or otherwise violated the terms of service in its popular games, including Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail.
Several leak communities have been arrested while some others have been shut down
HoYoverse announced that they received over 100,000 reports from players throughout the year regarding rule-breaking activities. These reports covered a wide range of issues, including the spreading of misinformation, leaking upcoming content, sharing cheat software, and the creation of unauthorized private servers, according to a post on their official WeChat account and a report by 4Gamer.
Throughout the year, HoYoverse addressed these issues through legal means. They worked with law enforcement on 22 criminal cases and also filed civil suits against 2,388 people who were involved in leaking information or cheating.
Over 1,200 people who violated copyright apologized publicly, and legal resolutions resulted in more than 37 million yuan (about $5.38 million) in compensation. HoYoverse also took action by removing over 109,000 illegal links and suspending 988 accounts connected to the violations.
HoYoverse reports it has taken action against over 500 sellers of cheating software. In one instance, a shop called Raindrop Studio was legally required to pay around $380,000 in fines for offering gameplay services that relied on these cheats.
Based on current patterns, we could see similar financial figures in 2026. This is because, earlier this year, three people linked to the HomDGCat Wiki – a popular source for leaks about the games Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail – were arrested for violating copyright laws.
HomDGCat members have been apprehended by the Chinese Public Security.

Other leakers are also becoming increasingly worried. Recently, popular HoYoverse leak source Seele Leaks, along with Hakushin, announced they are shutting down and will no longer share leaks.
It’s well known that HoYoverse goes after those who leak information about their games, and they’ve been doing so for several years. However, they’re now cracking down even harder, meaning leakers are likely to face consequences.
