The latest episode of Frieren is already being called one of the best anime episodes of the year. Episode 8 of Season 2 (also known as Episode 36) concludes the Divine Revolte Arc with an exciting battle. The episode focuses on Frieren, Fern, and Stark as they face off against a powerful demonic villain who is a master swordsman.
Frieren focuses more on the experiences along the way than on a specific ending, and recent episodes, like Season 2, Episode 8, demonstrate how powerful those experiences can be. This latest episode features what many consider the best animation in the series so far, and culminates in a deeply moving conclusion, making it a strong contender for the best episode of 2024.
Frieren Turns Into a Full-Blown Shonen Battle Anime With 2026’s Best Fight Scene Yet

Frieren Season 2, Episode 8 features two battles happening at the same time. One pits Fern and Methode against a pair of challenging opponents who fight in unpredictable ways, forcing the young mages to struggle. The other, more central fight, is between Stark and Genau as they team up to face the powerful Divine Revolte. This battle emphasizes strength and determination over complex magic and strategy.
The difference in fighting styles between these two pairs keeps the action lively and engaging without becoming too chaotic. While Fern and Methode’s battles are fast-paced, they offer a welcome contrast to the high-stakes, relentless fight Stark and Genau are having against Revolte.
This fight scene is incredible! Stark and Genau are battling Divine Revolte in what’s easily one of the best fights of the year. Stark’s sequence even features impressive parkour reminiscent of Shinichiro Watanabe’s work on Lazarus. However, Methode’s fight is equally amazing, boasting fantastic choreography and visually stunning magical spells.
Beyond the exciting action, the series excels in its quieter, more personal moments. Scenes like when Genau is manipulated by Divine Revolte’s emotional plea, or Fern’s unexpected disappearance from the demons’ detection, are just as impactful. Plus, Stark’s cool reaction after being injured by Divine Revolte is practically guaranteed to become a popular meme within the anime community – it’s that memorable.
Frieren’s Divine Revolte Arc Doesn’t Just Have Amazing Action — Its Characters Are as Well-Written as Ever
What makes Frieren special is its ability to seamlessly blend exciting action sequences with deeply moving and sincere storytelling. While many anime feature great battles, Frieren uniquely balances them with consistent humor and emotional depth. Episode 8 of Season 2 perfectly exemplifies this, offering a well-rounded experience much like a strong team of heroes.
I’m completely captivated by Genau’s arc in Frieren! It’s so compelling to watch him try to suppress his naturally kind heart after losing so many friends in battle. He really starts believing Serie when she says kindness just gets people killed. But what I find really interesting is how the physical fight in Episode 36 is also a clash between Frieren and Serie’s very different ways of looking at the world. And honestly, it’s not surprising that Frieren’s approach ultimately feels like the right one.
The first few episodes of Frieren Season 2 were enjoyable, but didn’t quite live up to expectations. While light and fun, the initial adventures didn’t fully showcase the series’ strong characters or the impressive animation from studio MADHOUSE. However, the new ‘Divine Revolte Arc,’ in just three episodes, has dramatically improved things.
Frieren Season 2, Episode 8, “A Magnificent End,” delivers on its title, providing a fantastic conclusion to the Divine Revolte Arc. This arc was brief but impactful, offering a welcome shift in tone from the generally lighter adventures we’ve seen this season. After experiencing such a high-quality story, returning to those simpler quests might feel a bit underwhelming, like going back to basic food after a gourmet meal. However, Frieren consistently demonstrates that even ordinary moments can be enjoyable when shared with cherished companions.
You can now watch the second season of Frieren on Crunchyroll. New episodes are released every Friday at 11:00 AM Eastern Time.
