Reese Witherspoon’s $142M Comedy Classic Breaks Into Peacock’s Top 10 Ahead of TV Reboot

People are loving Legally Blonde! The popular 2001 comedy featuring Reese Witherspoon has become a top 10 hit on the streaming service this week.

Currently, Legally Blonde is the ninth most popular movie on Peacock, climbing one spot from yesterday. It’s the oldest film in the Top 10, released four years before the next oldest, Madagascar (at number five). The movie’s recent popularity is probably due to the upcoming premiere of its prequel series, Elle, on Prime Video.

Legally Blonde Launched a Comedy Franchise for MGM

I absolutely love Legally Blonde! It’s about Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon, who gets dumped by her boyfriend because he thinks she’s not serious enough. So, she decides to show him – and everyone else – what she’s made of and gets into Harvard Law School to win him back! It’s such a fun story about proving people wrong.

Reese Witherspoon was joined by a talented cast including Selma Blair as Vivian Kensington, Warner’s new girlfriend; Luke Wilson as Emmett Richmond, a lawyer who becomes Elle’s love interest; and Jennifer Coolidge as the funny nail salon worker, Paulette Bonafonté. Osgood Perkins, Bruce Thomas, Victor Garber, Holland Taylor, and Linda Cardellini also appear in the film.

When Legally Blonde came out, it was a major success, earning $142 million globally despite only costing $18 million to make. Today, it’s considered a classic film from the early 2000s and currently has a 72% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from both critics and viewers.

After the success of Legally Blonde, a sequel called Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde came out in 2003, again starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods. In 2009, a spin-off movie, Legally Blondes, was released directly to video, with Witherspoon as a producer. A stage musical adaptation of the original 2001 film debuted on Broadway in 2007.

Elle Woods Gets Her Origin Story Told in New Prime Video Series

The next installment in the Legally Blonde series won’t be a sequel, but a prequel called Elle. It’s been in the works at MGM since 2018 and will show Elle Woods as a teenager in the 1990s. Lexi Minetree will play young Elle, and Reese Witherspoon will be an executive producer on the series.

I was so thrilled when Minetree and Witherspoon shared that first glimpse back in April 2025 – it signaled the beginning of filming for the prequel! The photo itself was just perfect, and the caption, “Harvard was hard. High School was harder,” immediately got me hooked and so curious about the story they were telling.

In addition to Elle, the series stars June Diane Raphael and Tom Everett Scott as Elle’s parents, Eva and Wyatt Woods. Chandler Kinney plays Kimberly, Jacob Moskovitz is Miles, Gabrielle Policano is Liz, and Zac Looker is Dustin. The show will also feature a recurring role for , who will play Dean Wilson, the city’s new Mayoral candidate and school district superintendent, throughout the first season.

The new series Elle will debut on Prime Video on July 1st. A second season is also planned, and it will feature Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, known for her role in Never Have I Ever.
