90s pop star looks unrecognisable as they take to the stage for UK tour 24 years after name change – can YOU guess who it is?

A 90s pop star looked unrecognisable as they took to the stage for their UK tour this week.

The singer, who adopted a new name 24 years ago to symbolize a fresh start, began their concert series last week in Norwich. They’ll continue to Birmingham, then perform in London and Brighton.

This American songwriter first became well-known in 1987 with their first album, and later won both a Grammy and a BRIT Award.

The band released four more albums, then decided to change their name. They’ve continued making music ever since, with their most recent album coming out last year.

The singer was also known for a very public affair that they managed to keep secret for years, only revealing it two years ago.

Can you guess who it could be?

It’s Terence Trent D’Arby, now known as Sananda Maitreya.

He posted a video from the tour on Instagram this week, captioning it: ‘You can always count on a Leeds crowd!’

We had a fantastic time last night and are so grateful to everyone who came, whether they traveled from close by or far away! We hope to see you all again soon.

It’s always a pleasure to perform in towns with such a strong musical heritage and deep-rooted traditions. There’s a palpable sense of warmth and kindness everywhere, woven into the very fabric of the place. We hope to return soon.

Sananda shared that two years prior, Sir Bob Geldof had confronted him about a relationship with Paula Yates while they were both married – a marriage that would ultimately end in divorce.

The 2023 Channel 4 documentary, Paula, offers a fresh look at the difficult life of TV presenter Paula Yates, who tragically died in 2000 from a heroin overdose at her home in Notting Hill.

The first episode explored Paula Yates’s marriage to Sir Bob Geldof and their contentious divorce in 1996. It showed how she was heavily criticized in the media after having a relationship with another singer.

Sananda publicly shared details of his relationship with Paula for the first time, revealing he considered her a ‘goddess’ when they first met in 1987.

He shared that Bob Geldof once approached him at his New York City hotel and directly accused him of having an affair with Geldof’s wife.

For the past 30 years, people have frequently asked Maitreya, now 60, about Paula Yates, but he’s always declined to speak about her – until today.

‘It’s a relief to finally have this outlet to talk about and celebrate her life,’ the singer said.

He said he first met her before his first performance on the TV show The Tube in 1987, when he sang his song ‘If You Let Me Stay’.

He admitted he was immediately drawn to Paula’s good looks.

He admitted his initial reaction to her was simply that she was very attractive. “I thought, ‘Wow, she’s really hot,’ like you would expect when you first see someone around 24 or 25,” he explained.

There are many attractive women in this industry, but she possessed a special quality that allowed her to truly leave a lasting mark on the culture and her era.

‘She was some type of goddess,’ he added.

Recently discovered recordings, made by OK! Magazine editor Martin Townsend soon after Michael Hutchence passed away in 1997, feature Paula discussing her relationship with Sananda.

Townsend could be heard asking her if she had ‘a bit of a thing’ with the singer.

The presenter admitted to having a year-long affair with someone named Terence, stating, ‘I didn’t just have a brief fling; it was a full-blown affair.’

It feels like forever ago, and it was a really difficult time. He meant the world to me, and I loved him deeply. Honestly, you’re the very first person I’ve ever confided in about it.

Sananda remembered when Paula’s husband, Bob, confronted him. Paula and Bob were still married when they were having an affair.

The singer said he was at a New York hotel when the front desk called to say a man in the lobby was eager to meet him.

I remember when Sananda first heard the name Bob Geldof – she actually said, ‘Oh, wow…!’ It was a totally genuine reaction, and she immediately repeated it, like she couldn’t believe it.

He angrily demanded to know if I was having an affair with his wife, essentially asking if I was cheating with her.

‘So of course, I did what any other self-respecting 25-year-old man would do and I f******* lied to him,’ he added.

The news about the affair surfaced in February 1988 when the newspaper News of the World (which no longer exists) published a story with the headline: ‘Bob’s Paula caught with Black star.’

Sananda explained in the program that the title was intended to provoke a strong public reaction.

‘I was gonna pay for that – I did – she was gonna pay for that – she did,’ he said.
