9 Years Ago, This 95% RT Coming-Of-Age Movie Starring A Game Of Thrones Actor Quietly Released

Coming-of-age stories are naturally uplifting and motivating – they feel deeply personal, yet often resonate with everyone. The most successful films in this genre strike a perfect balance, creating a lasting emotional impact on viewers.

Many of the most beloved coming-of-age films, like Juno, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Stand By Me, are still popular today and feel like cultural touchstones. However, a film that came out in 2016 is just as well-made, but hasn’t received nearly as much recognition.

Sing Street Is A Little-Known Coming Of Age Classic

I absolutely love Sing Street – it’s a real find if you’re into coming-of-age stories. It’s written and directed by John Carney, who made Once and Begin Again, and it even features Aidan Gillen, who you might recognize as Littlefinger from Game of Thrones! It’s a truly special film.

Sing Street, set in 1980s Dublin, tells the story of Conor, a young boy navigating a new school, his parents’ separation, and financial difficulties. Like other films by director John Carney, music is central to the story. Conor’s passion for music, and his desire to win over a girl, lead him to start a band with his new friends: Eamon, Larry, Garry, Ngig, and their self-appointed manager, Darren.

Unlike the movie School of Rock, Sing Street centers on a band formed by high schooler Conor as a way to cope with a difficult home life, strict teachers, and his first experiences with teenage crushes. Whether you were in a band yourself or not, the film captures the universal struggles of being a teenager, and Conor’s experiences will feel relatable even if you’re not familiar with 80s music.

Ultimately, Sing Street works as a relatable story about growing up, but its 1980s setting makes it feel deeply personal. The film captures a time of significant change and possibility, allowing viewers to connect with Conor as a character without simply seeing themselves in him. Even without knowing anything about the director John Carney’s life, it’s easy to recognize elements of his own childhood in Conor’s story. It’s a delicate balance to strike, and Sing Street manages it beautifully.

Sing Street offers the classic elements of a coming-of-age story – romance, rebellion, dreams, and friendship – but it also explores a deeper sense of sadness than many films in the genre. While most coming-of-age stories focus on characters discovering themselves through hardship, Sing Street is more about Conor coping with the breakdown of his family and trying to build a new life for himself. This leads to a surprisingly bold and hopeful, yet still realistic, ending that feels just right.

How Sing Street Was Received Upon Release In 2016

Critics and viewers alike loved Sing Street when it came out, giving it high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite not being widely released in theaters in the U.S., the film still managed to earn over $13 million worldwide, proving its success with audiences.

Despite building a dedicated following through home video and streaming, Sing Street faced several setbacks. It was among the final films released in the U.S. by The Weinstein Company, and a Broadway musical planned for 2020 was unfortunately canceled because of the pandemic. Thankfully, stage versions have appeared in Boston (2022) and London (2025), giving fans something to enjoy.

While “Sing Street” might not be a commonly talked-about film in the future, anyone who hasn’t seen it is in for a truly uplifting and inspiring movie experience.
