9 underrated slashers that deserve more attention (and where you can watch them)

Hush (2016)

  • Directed by: Mike Flanagan
  • Where to watch: Hush is coming to digital on Aug. 27, 2024

As a horror enthusiast who has spent countless hours watching films of the genre, I firmly believe that some slasher gems have been overlooked by the masses. Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, I hold a special place in my heart for these types of movies. Let me share with you three underrated slashers that have left a lasting impression on me.

The film “Hush,” which was released on Netflix in April 2016 and received favorable criticism from critics, is often overlooked when discussions revolve around the greatest slasher films. In my opinion, this is an issue worth addressing.

In a chilling turn of events, deaf-mute horror writer and scream queen Kate Siegel shines as the protagonist who stumbles into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with an unidentified intruder. This ominous figure invades her home under cover of darkness one fateful night. Alongside Siegel in this chilling tale are John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Samantha Sloyan, and Emma Graves, who round out the captivating cast.

Sleepaway Camp (1983)

  • Directed and written by: Robert Hiltzik
  • Where to watch: Tubi for free, Peacock for free, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

As a huge fan of horror movies, I can’t help but be drawn to the enigma that is “Sleepaway Camp.” This cult classic slasher film is renowned for its jaw-dropping twist ending. The story unfolds at a summer camp for teenagers, where a string of bizarre and grisly deaths leaves us all in suspense.

My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009)

  • Directed by: Patrick Lussier
  • Where to watch: Tubi for free, Amazon Prime Video, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

The 2009 film “My Bloody Valentine 3D” is a modern take on the 1981 slasher movie with the same title. Set in a small town, it follows the residents who become victims of a brutal killer with a pickaxe and mining attire on Valentine’s Day. The cast includes Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Kevin Tighe, Tom Atkins, and Edi Gathegi, bringing this chilling horror story to life.

Maniac (1980)

  • Directed by: William Lustig
  • Where to watch: Tubi for free, Shudder, available to rent or buy on digital platforms

As a gamer, I’d describe “Maniac” as a chilling slasher experience that may not be for the faint-hearted. In this grisly tale, a deeply disturbed individual named Frank takes center stage. Raised in neglect by his mother, Frank’s troubled past shapes him into a relentless serial killer. He stalks, murders, and scalps his victims in the bustling streets of New York City. Growning up, I couldn’t help but feel empathy for Frank as he endured unimaginable abuse. But as he descends deeper into madness, it becomes clear that this once innocent child has become a monster. The late Joe Spinell delivers an unforgettable performance as the hauntingly real Frank Zito.

The Final Girls (2015)

  • Directed by: Todd Strauss-Schulson
  • Where to watch: Available to rent or buy on digital platforms

In simpler terms, “The Final Girls” is a comedy with elements of horror, featuring moments of amusement. The storyline follows a band of teenage girls who inexplicably end up in a 1980s slasher movie, where they must battle an imaginary killer to stay alive. Tragedy Girls (2017)

“An often overlooked horror comedy is ‘Tragedy Girls.’ This film focuses on a pair of ambitious friends and wannabe social media sensations played by Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand, who resort to murder in order to boost their online presence. McKayla and Sadie, the two central characters, embark on a deadly journey to gain fame.”

Hell Fest (2018)

On Halloween night, a horror-themed amusement park plays host to a chilling storyline where a gang of friends finds themselves hunted by a masked murderer. To evade capture, the killer seamlessly merges into the park’s spooky actors and attractions. Featuring captivating performances from Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Christian James, Matt Mercurio, Roby Attal, and horror icon Tony Todd, this lesser-known slasher film is not to be missed.

The Burning (1981)

The film “The Burning” is famous for its graphic and gruesome special effects. This horror story revolves around a vengeful summer camp caretaker who suffered severe burns and disfigurement as a result of a prank gone awry. Determined to seek retribution, he targets those responsible for his injuries.
