9 new comic books to watch out for this week and one old pick worth reading

As a comic book enthusiast with over two decades of reading under my belt, I must say that this week‘s selection is nothing short of extraordinary!

The saga of Marvel’s Blood Hunt comes to an end, while DC’s Absolute Power might lead us somewhere unexpected. Don’t miss out on the gripping tales of Grim and Saga, along with other essential comics you shouldn’t overlook this week!

Saga No. 67

As a long-time comic book enthusiast, I’m genuinely thrilled about the latest releases for July’s last week. The grand finale of Marvel Comics’ crossover event, “Blood Hunt,” promises an exciting conclusion to the storyline that I’ve been eagerly following. Moreover, the debut of a new X-Men comic book titled “From the Ashes” is particularly intriguing since it delves deeper into a classic character’s mutant abilities, something that has always fascinated me due to my personal connection with these characters throughout my life.

Let’s not waste any time and get right into things.

  • Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
  • Artist: Fiona Staples

Blood Hunt No. 5

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Pepe Larraz

As a devoted fan, I’ve embarked on an exhilarating journey through “Blood Hunt” so far, filled with action, violence, and bloodshed that keeps me on the edge of my seat. However, I eagerly anticipate the consequences that will unfold in the series finale. If the storyline fails to deliver a satisfying resolution, it might feel like an unnecessary crossover event. Fortunately, Jed MacKay has consistently delivered compelling narratives, leaving me hopeful for a satisfying conclusion.

This will end with the beginning of Marvel’s crossover One World Under Doom.

X-Force No.1

  • Writer: Geoffrey Thorne
  • Artist: Marcus To

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the X-Men universe, I’m thrilled to delve deeper into the post-apocalyptic world of “X-Men: From the Ashes,” picking up where we left off with the exciting X-Force series. In this new chapter, Forge, our tech-savvy mutant, is not just fixing machines anymore – he’s honing his abilities to perceive and rectify issues on a larger scale. He’s assembling a team to tackle these problems head-on. The lineup includes familiar faces like Rachel Summers, Betsy Braddock, and Sage, along with a fresh recruit named Tank. Let’s see what adventures await us!

Additionally, you should know that there are more surprises in store for you. The first among these guest appearances is none other than the witty and irreverent character, Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII No. 3

  • Writer: Jeremy Adams
  • Artist: Marco Santucci

Amanda Waller’s Task Force VII’s Amazo robots persistently encounter unexpected problems. Black Adam noted that aside from absorbing powers and characteristics (as depicted in “Absolute Power: Task Force VII” issue 1), these robots also adopt personality traits. In “Absolute Power: Task Force VII” issue 3, the Amazo robot Jadestone is granted autonomy due to Allen Scott’s ring.

It’s possible that Task Force VII might recognize flaws in Amanda Waller’s strategy, leading them to assume control. Gradually, they seem to be asserting their own will. Once they become convinced of their own rightness and her wrongdoing, the scenario could shift dramatically, potentially placing absolute power in their hands.

Fantastic Four No. 22

  • Writer: Ryan North
  • Artist: Ivan Fiorelli

Reed Richards and Alicia Masters persistently safeguard people from turning into vampires or serving as their prey. Reed, who’s been pushing his abilities to the limit (both physically and metaphorically), has shown an incredible knack for innovation and an unwavering resolve not to falter. A question that arises is about the state of their family while they are absent.

Ultimate Spider-Man No. 7

  • Writer: Jonathan Hickman
  • Artist: Marco Checchetto

Grim No. 19

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Flaviano

Last week, I grabbed the first edition of Grim and haven’t stopped reading since. The stunning artistry beautifully enhances a creative exploration of themes surrounding death, life, and even Hell itself. Stephanie Phillips demonstrates her fitting selection for penning a Marvel comic featuring Jean Grey.

X-Men: Heir Of Apocalypse No. 4

  • Writer: Steve Foxe
  • Artist: Netho Diaz

In our upcoming encounter, we’ll discover who will claim the title as Apocalypse’s Heir. Will it be one of En Sabah Nur’s chosen contestants, or could it be someone unexpected? This author strongly believes that Warren Worthington III, also known as Archangel, is the ideal candidate for this role, a choice perhaps deliberately planned by Apocalypse himself.

In the third issue of ‘Heir of Apocalypse’, Warren experienced a profound realization following his battle and subsequent conversation with Apocalypse. It was as if the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place for him. Given that Warren was one of Apocalypse’s earliest Horsemen, as depicted in ‘X-Factor’ No. 24 by Louise Simonson, and took on the role of Apocalypse himself during ‘Uncanny X-Force’, it seems fitting that he should be next in line for some significant role or revelation.

Ms. Marvel Annual (2024) No. 1

  • Writers: Iman Vellani, Sabir Pirzada, Derek Landy
  • Artist: Sara Pichelli

Iman Vellani’s experience collaborating on comic book creation has been enjoyable. Marvel is pairing her with other writers to assist in expressing her ideas more effectively. This process is instrumental in her transition into the role of a mutant and this Annual will contribute further. Although it might be associated with the Infinity Watch crossover, whatever unfolds will constitute a chapter in her journey within the NYX series.

Not-new pick of the week!

  • Comic book: Transformers No. 1
  • Writer: Daniel Warren Johnson
  • Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson

After his recent double win at the Eisner Awards, it feels fitting to extol the virtues of Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers comic series once more. It truly excels in all aspects – from its intricate narrative to its intense action scenes reminiscent of wrestling matches. Moreover, it keeps unfolding the mysteries of the Energon Universe. Whether you’re a die-hard Transformers fan or seeking a fresh read, this issue is definitely worth adding to your collection for an exceptional reading experience.
