9 essential shows to watch this week – from ITV’s ‘fresh-style of detective’ to a chaotic thriller
Once again, Digital Spy is the perfect destination when you’re unsure of what to watch next. We’ve previously shared a list of boxsets that could keep you entertained over a weekend, as well as some gripping thrillers available for streaming immediately.
This week, you’ve got a lot to look forward to on TV. ITV’s beloved detective series, Karen Pirie, is back, and if that wasn’t enough, the second season of Channel 4’s suspenseful thriller, The Couple Next Door, with a fresh leading cast, is also premiering. Let’s dive in!
Karen Pirie
The critically acclaimed British crime series, titled “Karen Pirie, “, is preparing to premiere its second season. Many viewers were captivated by the first season, with one fan describing it as “a timeless British crime drama infused with a contemporary feel,” and another commending it for presenting “a unique take on detective work.” (via Rotten Tomatoes).
What to Read Next
In this latest installment, Detective Inspector Karen Pirie (played by Lauren Lyle), fresh from her promotion, finds herself grappling with a high-profile case that’s pressing down on her. Her superior and the media are hot on her heels for results, but there are other entities who prefer the truth about this case to remain hidden and potentially harmful.
Karen Pirie’s second season premieres on July 20th, airing at 8 PM on ITV1. If you haven’t seen the first season yet, you can catch up with it by streaming it now on ITVX.
The Couple Next Door
In the second season of “The Couple Next Door“, you might encounter fresh love stories, yet the intrigue and turbulence reminiscent of past scandals seems to persist (take a look at the trailer!).
As per the summary, the lives of heart surgeon Charlotte Roberts (from “The Split”) and her husband Jacob take a turn for the worse when their new hospital coworker Mia, who happens to live next door to them, enters the picture.
Introduce once more the neighborhood misfit, Alan (portrayed by Hugh Dennis,) and the appearance of Charlotte’s former lover, Leo (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy.) It appears that season two is devising fresh ways to keep audiences intrigued.
As a devoted gamer, I’m excitedly counting down the days until I can dive back into “The Couple Next Door” with the premiere of season 2 on the 14th of July at 9 pm on Channel. For those who haven’t caught up yet, fear not! You can stream season 1 right now on Channel 4 and prepare yourself for the gripping twists and turns that await in the next chapter.
Rebus
Fans of Rebus can reconnect with the gritty BBC version, since it has moved to Netflix starting from this week. Coincidentally, we’ve recently learned that Rebus will return for another season.
The highly praised series, boasting a flawless rating on Rotten Tomatoes, centers around the 40-year-old detective John Rebus (Richard Rankin), who’s grappling with turmoil in his private life.
His marriage has fallen apart due to a poisonous extramarital relationship, and his bond with his daughter is strained. He now finds himself in a position where he needs to rebuild his life while tackling harsh crimes, such as one connected to his brother who’s been drawn into the dangerous world of organized crime.
Rebus is available to watch on Netflix from 18 July, and is still streaming on BBC iPlayer.
Untamed
In the latest Netflix crime thriller titled “Untamed“, Eric Bana plays Kyle Turner, a member of the Investigative Services Branch within the National Parks Service. He’s hot on the heels of an elusive murderer who is remarkably familiar with Yosemite National Park, much like our protagonist himself.
Currently, Kyle needs to conquer the sinister turmoil brewing deep within himself to thwart a perilous assassin. However, there’s a snag: the ominous mysteries shrouding not only his own history but also the park’s hidden past could prove equally threatening…
Untamed is available to watch on Netflix from 17 July.
Bookish
In the heart of post-war London, 1946, I find myself immersed in an extraordinary drama, where I, Gabriel Book, a bookshop owner, become unexpectedly entangled with the city’s police force, solving the most peculiar of murders. Despite being blissfully married to my childhood best friend, Trottie (Polly Walker), our relationship is not rooted in romance as I, Gabriel, am gay.
The duo decide to give a chance to young prisoner Jack (portrayed by Connor Finch), with the intention of helping him change his path. However, things take an unexpected turn when they come to realize that Jack’s encounter with them was not by mere coincidence.
Bookish will premiere on U&Alibi on 16 July at 8pm.
The Summer I Turned Pretty, season 3
In the final season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” the long-standing question about who will ultimately win the heart of the leading lady, between Conrad and Jeremiah, will finally be resolved, much like the unforgettable love triangle involving Bella, Edward, and Jacob.
After an anticipated proposal expected to be spectacular, it seems that marriage might be in store for Belly and Jeremiah. However, one wonders if her past relationship with her former lover Conrad has truly come to an end.
Only one more trip to Cousins Beach, and an 11 episodes left until we find out.
this summer, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” returns for its third season on Amazon Prime Video, starting July 16th. You can catch up on seasons 1 and 2 right now by streaming them.
To Kill a Monkey
As a gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the upcoming Netflix thriller where I, Efemini (William Benson), find my peaceful life crumbling when I unwittingly get sucked into the treacherous world of online crime.
By escaping his daily hardships, he found himself treading a treacherous route filled with substantial ethical dilemmas and perilous risks.
To Kill a Monkey is available to watch on Netflix from 18 July.
Delightfully Deceitful
On Netflix, you’ll find the South Korean drama titled “Deceitfully Delightful,” initially aired in 2023. This series follows con artist Lee Ro-eum (played by Chun Woo-hee) and lawyer Han Moo-young (portrayed by Kim Dong-wook). Together, they collaborate to retaliate against those who have caused them harm in the past.
In this partnership, Moo-young’s compassion stands in contrast to Ro-eum’s absence of it, creating an unconventional dynamic. However, they jointly pursue a past client of Moo-young.
Delightfully Deceitful is available to watch on Netflix from 18 July.
Mix Tape
In the realm of ’80s nostalgia, I’ve found myself captivated by a four-act tale that weaves the love story of Alison and Daniel. This captivating narrative unfolds across two distinctive periods in their lives – their teenage years serving as the foundation, and their reconnection in adulthood marking the climax.
In this situation, you find yourself torn between two options: restart the countdown with someone you’ve let slip away, or remain loyal to your happy family life. Interestingly, the series named Mix Tape features a captivating collection of retro tunes as its soundtrack.
The complete Mix Tape can be streamed on BBC iPlayer starting from 6:00 AM on Tuesday, 15th July. It will also be aired on BBC Two at 9:00 PM the same day.
The latest print edition from Digital Spy is out! Grab a copy of “Oasis – Live in ’25” at your local newsstands or purchase it online for only £8.99.
