9 creepy-as-hell shows to watch on BBC, Netflix and more this Halloween, including a “terrifying” new horror

Looking for the perfect shows to get you ready for Halloween? Digital Spy has compiled a list of recommendations, from brand new releases planned for 2025 to all-time classic favorites. There’s something for everyone, whether you prefer truly scary shows or something more comforting.

IT: Welcome to Derry

Coming in 2025, just in time for Halloween, Welcome to Derry is a new horror series that goes back in time to tell the story before the events of the popular It movies. Based on Stephen King’s novel, the series is set in the 1960s in the town of Derry, before it was terrorized by the evil force at the heart of the story.

I’m so excited for Welcome to Derry! What we do know is awesome – Bill Skarsgård is coming back as Pennywise, and that’s just fantastic (and scary!). It’s all shrouded in mystery, but having him reprise the role is huge.

What to Read Next

IT: Welcome to Derry is streaming on HBO in the US, and on 27 October on Sky and NOW in the UK.

Alien: Earth

This new thriller is a prequel to the classic Alien movie series, which began in the 1970s. It delivers the frightening moments and intense violence fans expect, but also offers a deeper, more complex story.

A strange spaceship crashes to Earth, and a young woman along with a team of soldiers uncover a dangerous secret that threatens the entire planet.

Alien: Earth is available to stream on Disney+.

Channel Zero

If you’re a horror fan, you should check out Channel Zero – it’s a fantastic show that somehow flies under the radar. It ran for four seasons between 2016 and 2018, and each season is based on a different scary story originally shared online, turning those short tales into full-blown nightmares.

Each season of Channel Zero delivers a uniquely creepy and imaginative horror experience, using striking visuals and truly disturbing storylines to redefine what’s possible on television. It’s unlike anything else in the horror genre right now.

All seasons of Channel Zero are streaming now on Prime Video.

Inside No. 9

Get ready for a chillingly funny experience with Inside No. 9, the dark comedy series from Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Each episode is a self-contained story, often with a creepy or unsettling vibe, but always uniquely charming.

If you’re looking for a spooky episode to watch for Halloween, try “The Harrowing” (season 1, episode 6). It features a babysitter who discovers things aren’t as they appear while watching over a creepy house belonging to Hector and Tabitha.

Inside No.9 is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

The Haunting of Hill House

Mike Flanagan’s 2018 series is a standout show that goes beyond typical horror. Based on Shirley Jackson’s novel, the 10 episodes tell the story of siblings and their unsettling experiences growing up in a now-infamous haunted house.

Hill House was a truly effective horror story, complete with frightening jump scares. However, it was also a moving and beautifully crafted exploration of loss and the lasting impact of childhood experiences.

The Haunting of Hill House is available on Netflix.

Wednesday

Okay, if you want a Halloween show that’s spooky but fun – not terrifying – you seriously need to check out ‘Wednesday’! I just finished the second season on Netflix, and it’s amazing. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, now’s the time – everyone’s talking about it for a reason!

Directed by Tim Burton and featuring Jenna Ortega in the lead role, the show Wednesday embraces a dark and gothic aesthetic.

Wednesday seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix.

Agatha All Along

Okay, as a fan, I have to say this WandaVision spinoff with Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza is just fantastic! It’s got a really fun, witchy vibe, and it’s genuinely entertaining. While it is part of the bigger Marvel world and has connections to everything else, you don’t need to be a huge Marvel fan to enjoy it. It’s perfect for a cozy, spooky season watch!

Agatha All Along is available so stream on Disney+.

Marianne

This French horror show premiered on Netflix in 2019. It centers on a popular horror author who goes back to her hometown and realizes a terrifying spirit from her nightmares is now causing real-world problems.

While the movie relies on familiar horror tropes and clichés, it’s still genuinely scary and disturbing – exactly what you’d expect from a horror film, and likely why you’re reading this review.

Marianne is streaming on Netflix.

Stranger Things

Just a heads-up: the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show Stranger Things is coming soon! Now’s a great time to revisit the town of Hawkins and get ready for it.

During the vibrant 1980s, Will Byers and his friends, who are passionate about Dungeons & Dragons, become entangled in strange, supernatural events and uncover hidden government experiments. As they investigate these mysteries, the dangers they face only grow more intense.

You can currently watch seasons 1 through 4 of Stranger Things on Netflix. The fifth and final season will be released in three parts, beginning with the first set of episodes on November 27th.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at newsstands and online for only £8.99.
