9-1-1 Shocks Fans: Bobby Nash’s Death Leaves the Show—and Viewers—in Pieces
Over a brief period, two highly-watched TV shows experienced the tragic loss of beloved father figures: Bobby Nash from 9-1-1, and another. The demise of Joel, in The Last of Us, was somewhat expected given its apocalyptic narrative. Conversely, Bobby’s passing on 9-1-1 came as an unexpected shock on a series that typically employs plot armor. However, similar to The Last of Us, 9-1-1 takes the time to guide both characters and viewers through the grieving process.
In Episode 16 of Season 8, titled “The Last Alarm”, unfolds two weeks following a significant event. As anticipated, many find it hard to cope, particularly Athena and Chimney. Athena secludes herself physically and mentally to tackle an unexpected case as a means of reinforcing her denial that Bobby truly is gone. On the other hand, Chimney grapples with survivor’s guilt, experiencing more anger than sadness over Bobby’s selfless act. However, a touching tribute in honor of Bobby fails to revive the hope that this series will ever regain its former charm without him.
9-1-1 Confirms That Despite Fan Pleas, Bobby Nash Really Is Dead
Fan Theories About Bobby’s Survival Are Quickly Dispelled
The responses to Bobby’s demise have been quite intriguing. A cluster of theorists banded together in a clear manifestation of the denial phase, coming up with outlandish theories that were surprisingly plausible given the show’s past eccentricities. The four most popular hypotheses included this being a Chimney-induced coma dream, Bobby being secretly buried alive (due to a leaked false script), Bobby being held by the government for scientific experiments, and even the extraordinary notion that Bobby would be brought back to life like Jesus. The last one is the most far-fetched of them all, but considering the show’s history of killing off characters, particularly its most devout Catholic one on Easter, it seems a bit unexpected what they might do next.
9-1-1 might not always satisfy its viewers, but it skillfully understands its audience, both positively and negatively. The narrative starts with a flashback of a character returning, leading viewers to hope he’s back permanently. However, the prolonged delay in releasing Bobby’s body is suspicious, followed by his burial in Minnesota, leaving no doubt that he’s departed. This gradual revelation could be seen as a form of callousness, feeding false hopes to those still grieving and gradually awakening them from their delusion. Yet, this methodical manipulation of emotions serves to make the audience feel connected to a world that is shattered and filled with sorrow.
9-1-1 Keeps Athena From Moving On With a Symbolic Subplot
Why Athena Still Can’t Accept Her Husband’s Death
It’s surprising how swiftly Athena seems to be overcoming the traumatic incident where she witnessed her husband’s death through a glass window. One might wonder how anyone could bear such pain and carry on with their life. In typical Athena style, she copes by immersing herself in her work. She picks up an old case, investigating the alleged kidnapping of a baby that occurred during a fire that her team had responded to years ago. This case holds personal significance for her, not because Bobby was involved, but because she identifies with the grieving mother in this situation.
As a dedicated fan of 9-1-1, I found myself questioning the tone of one particular subplot in the latest episode. The portrayal of the mother projecting her grief onto a boy she believes was taken from her felt a bit too whimsical, especially given Bobby’s farewell episode and Athena’s ongoing mourning process. However, Angela Bassett delivered an exceptional performance in this scene that truly stood out among her previous work on the show. While it’s no secret that Bassett deserves every accolade she receives, her ability to convey a complex mixture of anger and sadness in this performance was nothing short of remarkable, especially within the context of a procedural series.
9-1-1 Tries to Establish a Show Without Bobby Nash
The Series Future Looks Incomplete, Yet Also Full of Potential
After Athena informs the mother that her child hadn’t been taken but had tragically perished in the house fire, it provides closure for Athena so she can finally lay Bobby to rest. The funeral is tastefully executed, emphasizing Bobby’s role as a firefighter, mentor, husband, and father. The episode wraps up poignantly with Athena, May, and Harry traveling to Minnesota to bury Bobby alongside his ex-wife and children. “You’re home now, baby,” Athena tenderly says to Bobby, kneeling beside his casket.
This episode presents an odd sensation, as though everyone simply carries on as usual after Bobby’s passing. Interestingly, Athena and Chimney are given ample time to grieve due to the circumstances, but the quick two-week time jump prevents us from witnessing how Buck, Eddie, Hen, and May first react to the loss, potentially giving an impression that they aren’t as affected as one might expect.
To put it another way, what impact might this have on Athena’s narrative? While female characters aren’t reliant on men to propel their stories, Bobby has consistently played a significant role in her character development. If he were to depart, what path would she take next? As long as Bassett is willing to guide Athena through this challenging phase, she will remain. However, if the creators of 9-1-1 decide it’s time for a permanent change, it could signal the end for another major character too – potentially leading the show into deeper difficulty.
9-1-1 airs Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. on .
