9-1-1: Is Bobby Nash Alive?

Contagion, a gripping two-part storyline revolving around LAFD station 118 being trapped inside a lab explosion. The team, with Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) and Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) joining for an undercover mission, found themselves in a precarious position when they had to perform dangerous procedures on Henrietta “Hen” Wilson’s (Aisha Hinds) damaged lung.

In a more pressing matter, Howard “Chimney” Han suffered devastating damage to his Personal Protective Equipment in an explosion, leaving him exposed to a highly dangerous variant of CCHF (Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever). Remarkably, Ravi Panikkar (Anirudh Pisharody) had his first brush with death on the show 9-1-1, when his oxygen tank malfunctioned, with Krause’s Captain Bobby Nash seemingly being the only survivor. Tragically, it was later revealed that Bobby himself had contracted CCHF but concealed his infection, knowing that there was only one antiviral dose left. After securing Chimney’s safety and ensuring the evacuation of his team, Bobby tragically succumbed to his illness at the end of 9-1-1 season 8, episode 15.

Every Detail Matters

To many, the shocking demise of Bobby Nash seemed unbearable to accept as truth. A strong point suggesting his death might be a deception is rooted in the virus he contracted – instead of succumbing to an ordinary case of CCHF, Bobby was taken down by a highly-evolved strain, crafted by Moira Blake from 9-1-1 (played by Bridget Regan). Unlike regular CCHF which has a mortality rate of around 30% and develops over weeks, this super-strain causes organ failure within mere hours. The popular belief is that since it expedited the symptoms dramatically, Moira’s strain might have induced a temporary deathlike condition.

A creative interpretation of Bobby’s apparent demise in 9-1-1 season 8, episode 15 is suggested by the ending song “Work Song” by Hozier. The lyrics, though deeply romantic, can be read literally and imply a sense of immortality. Phrases like ““when my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold, dark earth”” and ““no grave could hold my body down, I’ll crawl home to her.”” align perfectly with the emotional conclusion between Bobby and Athena. However, it also hints playfully at the idea that Bobby might miraculously escape his own grave, symbolically “crawling home” back to Athena.

What Are The Chances That Bobby May Actually Be Alive?

Extremely Slim But Not Zero

In a more casual and understandable manner, The ideas about how Bobby miraculously comes back to life on 9-1-1 might be fun to imagine (and somehow reassuring), but they lack substantial scientific backing. Many of the main cast members have bid farewell to Bobby and paid tribute to Peter Krause, each picture adding to the sense of finality. Despite the cast appearing as sorrowful as we viewers, it doesn’t alter the truth: According to a letter from Peter Krause himself, Bobby Nash is no longer with us on 9-1-1.

In a less than ideal turn of events for the show “9-1-1”, the demise of character Bobby in season 8, episode 15, while not perfect, served as a powerful and poignant moment. However, his death seemed to limit the progression of his storyline in numerous ways. The acting of Krause and Bassett in this role is nothing short of exceptional. Watching Athena witness Bobby’s death on “9-1-1” once felt like a terrible nightmare, but it has since become one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the series finale of “Contagion”. Bringing Bobby back to life may not be the next major plot development, but fans of the show will need a way to cope with their loss.
