80s pin-up looks unrecognizable 40 years after starring in superhero film… can you guess who?

As I delve into the captivating world of Helen Slater, a veritable icon of the superhero genre, one cannot help but marvel at the extraordinary journey her career has taken. From the silver screen to the small screen and back again, she has graced us with her presence as Supergirl, a role that catapulted her into the annals of pop culture history.

40 years ago, an actress famed for her starring role in a superhero movie made a seldom-seen appearance in Los Angeles this past week.

In the film adaptation of a DC comic, the pin-up girl from the ’80s landed her role at just 18 years old.

So far in her acting career, she’s been fortunate to collaborate with stars like Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Faye Dunaway, Billy Crystal, Michael J. Fox, and even Brad Pitt.

She has over 70 acting credits to her name – and also appeared in a number of television shows.

Around the turn of the millennium, she delved into another interest, music, and put out her debut studio album, which was followed by four more albums, with her most recent one released in 2019.

But can you guess who it is?

Helen Slater, aged 61, is recognized for her portrayal of Kara Zor-El in the 1984 superhero movie, ‘Supergirl’.

The character shares the distinction of being Superman’s cousin, and their story unfolds within the same fictional universe. However, the film initially struggled to find success at the box office when it premiered in cinemas.

In Jeannot Szwarc’s direction, the project managed to earn $14.3 million against an initial budget of $35 million.

Beyond Slater, I couldn’t help but be starstruck by the incredible ensemble that graced the screen: the legendary Peter O’Toole, the radiant Faye Dunaway, the captivating Mia Farrow, the charismatic Hart Bochner, and the mesmerizing Brenda Vaccaro. Simply breathtaking!

On Thursday, during her lone adventure, Helen opted for a relaxed look, donning a light blue button-up shirt and a pair of comfortable, slightly baggy gray trousers that fell just above her ankles.

Furthermore, she put on a comfortable pair of gray lace-up sneakers and topped it off with a matching gray hat, settling it atop her hair.

Over her left shoulder, she carried a chic cross-body bag, which happened to be black. Additionally, she wore fashionable black sunglasses on her person, known as shades.

Instead of adorning flashy jewelry, Helen chose to go without it while walking casually through a peaceful residential area, humming to the rhythm of her headphones.

During their casual excursion, the actress was seen picking up a warm beverage at Starbucks prior to proceeding to her following location.

Slater has made appearances in various other works, such as The Legend of Billie Jean (1985), City Slickers (1991), and Lassie (1994).

In 1984, her groundbreaking acting appearance was as Supergirl within the DC film, marking the fourth installment of the Superman movie franchise that featured Christopher Reeve as Superman.

In an earlier conversation on the Inside Of You podcast, hosted by Michael Rosenbaum, Helen discussed her role in the superhero movie that she was selected for.

She confessed, “I began sobbing because it felt like my entire life had undergone a tremendous shift.

At present, a modern adaptation of the 1984 movie is being developed by Warner Bros. Studios. Milly Alcock has been cast to play the leading character in the upcoming film titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The Australian-born actress is known for her role in the HBO series, House Of The Dragon, as well as the show Upright.

When the news about her being cast was announced in January, the CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, shared his thoughts about it via social media.

He expressed, ‘Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU.’

‘Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl.’

In the previous year, Gunn discussed the contrast between the character of Supergirl and the forthcoming Superman film, scheduled for release in theaters on July 2025.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he mentioned that Superman, who was sent to Earth as a baby and brought up by caring parents, is unique compared to others.

Born on a celestial rock called Krypton, she was essentially a miniature replica of its greatness. For the initial fourteen years of her existence, she bore witness to the demise and slaughter of those around her in gruesome manners. Her journey then led her to the Earth.

In the forthcoming movie, Matthias Schoenaerts has been chosen to play the antagonist, taking on the role of Krem from the Yellow Hills.

He has starred in other past projects such as Suite Française, Far From The Madding Crowd, Red Sparrow, and A Little Chaos.

James further discussed the development of the movie during New York Comic Con in October.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, during a discussion, he mentioned that writer Anna Nogueira presented an outstanding pitch for Supergirl, which he found to be one of the best he’s ever encountered. She then proceeded to write the story based on her pitch.

Gunn mentioned that she initially brought a fantastic first draft, and since then, it has consistently improved even more.

Later on, director Craig Gillespie has proven to be a joy to collaborate with, and I’m eagerly anticipating the release of our project together.

The organization follows a three-part structure instead of the usual one that progresses through multiple narratives. Yet, like other structures, it still focuses on primary characters and significant themes.

The filming for Supergirl will start in January 2025, with an anticipated theater release scheduled for July 2026. This means it will debut a year following the premiere of the forthcoming Superman movie.

In a continuation from her role in the 1984 DC movie, Helen Slater continues to be associated with the superhero realm, but it’s unclear whether she’ll participate in the upcoming reboot of Supergirl.

In the Supergirl series that aired from 2015 to 2021, initially on CBS and subsequently on The CW, she played the character of Eliza Danvers.

Slater was additionally featured on Smallville, a series that chronicled the life of a youthful Clark Kent character.
