’80s icon reveals bizarre moment he and Caitlyn Jenner were told to ‘stuff their shorts with socks’ for film

In simpler terms, one prominent celebrity from the 1980s is reflecting on an unusual incident that occurred when he was working with Caitlyn Jenner on set.

As a follower dedicated to emulating the path of Steve Guttenberg, I can’t help but reminisce about an extraordinary incident during our collaboration on the 1980 movie “Can’t Stop The Music.” It was during this production that Steve and I found ourselves receiving an odd request from none other than the esteemed figure, Mr. Bruce Jenner, now age 75.

In an account shared by a 66-year-old actor on Page Six, it’s reported that he and the Olympic athlete, who was new to acting, were instructed to fill their pants pockets with socks for a fuller appearance in certain areas, supposedly to enhance the bulge.

‘I did wear really skimpy shorts,’ he explained to the publication earlier this week.

As a devoted devotee, I’d like to share an intriguing detail about the making of a movie. Allan Carr, my esteemed collaborator on the film, asked Guttenberg and Jenner to fill their shorts with socks for a slight size enhancement, as per his request.

Guttenberg mentioned that he had previously informed Alan, “There was no need for a sock,” as a joke because they did not require it anyway.

Regardless of efforts to portray Guttenberg and Jenner as strong figures, the movie ‘Can’t Stop The Music’ proved to be a commercial failure and a critical disaster instead.

In this adaptation of a disco-themed musical, the storyline traced the ascension of The Village People, albeit fictitiously portrayed. Canfield (played by Guttenberg) served as an unconventional representation of Jacques Morali, the French composer and record producer who co-created the group.

In 2015, Jenner, now identified as a transgender woman, portrayed a lawyer who unexpectedly became entangled in the formation of the Village People, ultimately resulting in his resignation from his law firm when they refused to support the rising disco ensemble’s representation.

Carr, who was believed to have persuaded Guttenberg and Jenner to wear shorts on set, viewed the movie as a potential breakout role for the Olympic gold medalist. In 1979, he predicted to The New York Times that Can’t Stop The Music would catapult Jenner to stardom, comparing him to Robert Redford of the ’80s.

However, due to the disappointing critical and box office performance of her cult camp movie, Jenner’s acting roles shifted primarily to television appearances. It wasn’t until 2011 that she reappeared in a feature film, the widely panned comedy Jack and Jill, which featured Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes, and Al Pacino.

Speaking with Page Six, Gutenberg cautioned that actors should guard against the growth of excessive pride, as the industry is inherently unstable and one should not be deceived by appearances.

‘You’re very important today, and tomorrow nobody knows who you are,’ he said.

He mentioned that he had attempted to keep a calm and rational approach towards the unpredictable nature of Hollywood, where triumph brings acclaim, but a setback could result in an actor being swiftly discarded.

In his latest venture, Gutenberg stars in the Lifetime film titled “Kidnapped By A Killer.” His character, John Edward Robinson, is a historical figure known for being the initial serial killer who leveraged the internet to interact with his victims.

Robinson, the individual who confessed to numerous homicides, is presently serving several life imprisonments following a trial held in Missouri. Additionally, he was sentenced to death after being found guilty of three murders in Kansas.

Guttenberg said he put in ‘a ton of research’ to play the convicted killer.

He mentioned that the opportunity seemed extraordinary to him since playing a serial killer is usually a rare chance for an actor throughout their career, and this particular role seems promising.

He mentioned that he had to spend an hour and a half each day in a makeup chair during filming to create Robinson’s unique appearance, and he was also required to gain weight to resemble the convicted murderer more closely.

The actor from Three Men And A Baby quipped playfully, ‘It was delightful!’ He shared, ‘I enjoyed eating ice cream and pasta; that part was quite enjoyable.’

In the spirit of community and safety, I found myself at the forefront of assisting my fellow residents in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, during the unfortunate wildfires that struck our city in January this year. It was a heart-wrenching situation, yet an opportunity to showcase the power of unity and compassion.

His own $5 million Palisades home was ultimately spared, but it suffered ‘terrible smoke damage.’

‘Everything needs to be replaced,’ he said, and the job will likely take a full year.

In the interim, Guttenberg has temporarily resided in New York, as his house on the West Coast undergoes repairs.

In my professional perspective, an unexpected life shift coincided with the conclusion of actor John Doe’s marital journey with Emily Smith, as he initiated divorce proceedings in April, marking the end of their six-year union.

They had been together since at least 2014 and tied the knot in 2019.

In the past, Gutenberg was married to model Denise Bixler, starting in 1988. Their marriage ended with a separation in 1991 and they finalized their divorce the next year.
