80s icon Mr T, 73, pays respects at Jesse Jackson homegoing service

Mr. T was a hugely memorable celebrity of the 1980s, instantly recognizable for his impressive physique, distinctive mohawk haircut, and the massive 40-pound collection of gold chains he always wore.

Before becoming famous as a movie star, the man who called himself the ‘World’s Greatest Bodyguard’ provided security for many famous people, such as Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, and boxing champion Muhammad Ali.

Oh my gosh, you wouldn’t BELIEVE how quickly everyone noticed him! Hollywood came calling almost immediately, and he totally blew everyone away in Rocky III. Seriously, he stole that movie! And then… then he said it. That line. ‘I pity the fool!’ It wasn’t just a line, it was him. It defined his whole career, I swear! I still get chills thinking about it.

Mr. T became a famous and beloved figure for many young people thanks to his role as Sergeant Bosco ‘B.A.’ Baracus in the popular 1980s TV show, The A-Team.

I remember when Mister T was absolutely everywhere! It was amazing to see him reach another level of popularity when his own cartoon, ‘Mister T,’ finally premiered on NBC back in 1983. I was glued to the TV every Saturday morning!

The popular actor recently attended the memorial service for civil rights leader Jesse Jackson in Chicago. He was seen at the event at age 73, paying his respects.

Mr. T kept it casual with a T-shirt and denim overalls, finishing the outfit with his iconic American flag bandana.

People saw him warmly welcoming others as the city honored the famous civil rights leader.

The memorial service for Jackson lasted over five hours and beautifully combined emotional tributes with uplifting gospel music, making for a truly memorable celebration of his life.

Barack Obama was one of three former presidents who spoke at Friday’s service at House of Hope on Chicago’s South Side, delivering a powerful and moving eulogy.

Mr. T had a tough upbringing, growing up in the Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago with eleven siblings, all sharing a small, three-bedroom apartment. This challenging environment taught him how to be strong and overcome difficulties from a young age.

Laurence Tureaud, later known as Mr. T, experienced a difficult childhood when his father, a minister, left when he was five years old. This early abandonment deeply affected him and contributed to the strong, yet moral, character he became known for.

Back in 1983, Mr. T explained to Playboy that when he turned 18 and gained the right to vote, he declared himself a man and adopted the name ‘Mr. T’ so people would automatically address him with that title.

It’s a level of respect my father, brother, and mother were never shown.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe where Mr. T started! After leaving the army in the late ’70s, he was a bouncer at this club in Chicago called Dingbats. That’s where the real Mr. T started to emerge, seriously. I mean, the gold chains weren’t just a look – he actually collected them, and other jewelry, from people who lost them during the fights that were always breaking out! It was like he was building the legend piece by piece, right there in that club. It’s amazing to think about now, isn’t it?

His breakout came with Rocky III and The A-Team, turning him into an international star.

Mr. T quickly became incredibly popular across many different media. He starred in motivational videos, worked with the D.A.R.E. program, released a rap album with positive messages, teamed up with Hulk Hogan in WWE, and made numerous appearances on talk shows.

As the 1980s gave way to the 1990s, the roles slowed.

After becoming a Christian, he began prioritizing work that matched his personal beliefs, and even declined an offer to return to his role on The A-Team.

Despite everything, he’s still been seen in the public eye. This year, he appeared in a Skechers commercial with football star Tony Romo, and he continues to make fun appearances in other projects.

In 1995, he was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma and faced a difficult personal struggle. True to his character, he found humor in the situation, pointing out the irony of the disease’s name.

Thankfully, he went into remission, but the experience only strengthened his resolve.

Despite ups and downs, Mr. T’s impact on pop culture remains undeniable.

He voiced a character in the 2009 film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2017, and remains a nostalgic figure associated with the 1980s.

He has three children with his former wife, Phyllis Clark. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he stopped wearing his famous gold chains and jewelry, a change he made due to his Christian faith.
