80s Icon Looks Unrecognizable in Rare Outing—Guess Who It Is!

In a casual event in Los Angeles on Thursday, an iconic ‘80s film star was hardly recognizable.

Over the course of her long career, the actress has featured in various films and TV shows.

She’s been collaborating with several famous faces including Bill Murray, Tom Hanks, Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy, and Molly Ringwald.

Besides earning numerous awards for her acting, she was also recognized with a nomination for a Golden Globe in the late 1970s.

The actress is recognized as well for lending her voice to a beloved character from a legendary kids’ film series.

But can you guess who it is?

Annie Potts, aged 72, is known for her acting roles in films such as “Pretty In Pink” from 1986 and the “Ghostbusters” series.

In the movie Pretty in Pink directed by John Hughes, she portrayed the character Iona, sharing the screen with Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Harry Dean Stanton.

In addition to her role as an actress, she took on the character of Secretary Janine Melnitz in the original Ghostbusters movie released in 1984. Five years after that, she reprised her role in the film’s sequel.

In 2016’s Ghostbusters film, which boasted a female ensemble led by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, Potts appeared in a brief role.

In addition, she once again took on the character of Janine in the 2021 film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and is expected to reprise this role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, set for release in 2024.

This week, Annie chose an informal look as she ventured out in Los Angeles, sporting a pair of black pants and a black sweater.

I opted for a cozy layer by donning a sleek black jacket over my outfit, ensuring I stayed comfortable in the crisp weather. To complete the look, I slipped on a pair of stylish white sneakers.

With ease, Potts slung a bright-yellow handbag across her right shoulder, keeping essentials handy for her outing during the day.

Annie hails from Nashville, where she was born in October 1952, and eventually earned her bachelor’s degree in theater from Stephens College, located in Missouri.

Back in 1978, I, an aspiring actress, took my first steps onto the silver screen in the lively, action-comedy flick known as Corvette Summer.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category “New Star Of The Year – Actress”, due to her exceptional acting in the film.

Other film roles that Potts has taken on includes voicing Bo Beep in the Toy Story franchise.

Annie isn’t new to leading roles in movies, but she’s equally accomplished in TV productions as well.

Between 1986 and 1993, the actress portrayed the character Mary Jo Shively on the TV series “Designing Women”. This popular sitcom featured acting talents such as Dixie Carter, Jean Smart, Delta Burke, Meshach Taylor, and Julia Duffy.

During a past interview with Glamour, Potts opened up about her role in the popular series.

I opted for Designing Women as I’d been engaged in filmmaking, frequently taking my young son with me on set locations. He yearned for consistency; he desired to remain in our hometown, enjoy playing soccer, and live a typical life.

Annie went on to say, “I figured, ‘It might be nice to have something.’ Little did I know just how well that would work out.

For seven seasons, the sitcom graced CBS airwaves, and during that time, Potts shared with the outlet: ‘We barely had mobile phones at our disposal back then. The television landscape was quite distinct since there were fewer channel options available compared to today’s 375 channels.’

I believe we may not have fully grasped the magnitude of our success. Despite having impressive figures, it seems we didn’t receive the acknowledgement that was due to us.

During the 1990s, Annie gained fame by playing a leading role in “Love & War,” a performance that landed her an Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

From 1998 to 2002, I had the privilege of portraying M.E. Sims in the hit series “Any Day Now.” This role not only provided me with an incredible platform to showcase my acting skills but also earned me a prestigious SAG Award nomination.

In her latest television endeavor, Annie starred as Meemaw, Sheldon’s loving grandmother on the series ‘Young Sheldon’. This popular show concluded its run last year.

Over the course of seven thrilling seasons, I’ve been an avid fan of the spin-off series that serves as a prequel to the beloved sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. However, recently, CBS made an announcement that left me with a bittersweet feeling – they confirmed that our seventh season would be its final run.

In an interview with Variety last year in April, Potts expressed his opinion that cancelling the show was a ‘short-sighted business decision.’

Annie found parting with the series particularly difficult as she wasn’t expecting it at all. She was taken aback, considering it was the top-rated show on network television and number one on Netflix.

As a devoted follower, I can confidently say that among the myriad creators on TikTok, I appear to be one of the most-watched, excluding a handful of popular pasta recipe videos. To me, it seems quite perplexing to engage in such a seemingly unwise business move.

Allow me to express, ‘I must admit, I was taken aback as well. Although it’s usually evident when a series is losing its momentum or failing to deliver compelling narratives, this situation has caught us off guard. I share your surprise.’

Throughout her career, she’s also been featured on various television series such as Magnum, P.I., Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Ugly Betty, and Two and a Half Men.

At present, Potts is engaged in another venture and has joined the cast of the romantic comedy “40 Dates and 40 Nights”, where she’ll be working alongside Bailee Madison and Eric Nelsen.

Speaking with Glamour about her work in the industry, Potts shared that she’s consistently found ways to stay occupied. During her free moments, she indulges in theater performances, often seeking out opportunities to engage her creativity.

Each day I step onto the set feels as exhilarating as the very first time. My passion for my work remains undiminished; every new lesson I gather only fuels my excitement.

The actress remarked, “I can’t imagine growing tired of it. I won’t be retiring, not at all. So long as they want me, I’ll keep working.
